Dec 1934- Italian soldiers lost to the Ethiopians, Mussolini said that it was their territory- they quarreled about the disputed territory on the borderland of Italian Somaliland.
Jan 1935- Britain, France, and Italy sign the Stresa pact, which protest the German rearmament.
Feb 1935- Mussolini sent approximately 100000 troops to Italian Somaliland. The League of Nations did not anything.
June 1935- Britain banned arms on Italy and Ethiopia.
August 1935- Britain reaffirmed the Prohibition on rearmament. France and Britain then offer concessions to Italy, however they are rejected by both Italy and Ethiopia.
Sept 1935- Ethiopian army began to rearm, but only with poor weapons. The League of Nations set up a plan for Italy, but got rejected.
Oct 1935- Italian troops invaded Ethiopia and captured many areas. The League decided that Italy was the aggressor and discussed about sanctions.
Nov 1935- Britain and France did not do anything towards Italy, in the fear of losing Italy as their ally- especially because Nazi Germany was becoming more dangerous. The League, also, did not ban any oil or steel because it would affect other countries’ economy like Britain’s. But the League did ban Italy from buying and getting raw materials- but they were still allowed to be in Abyssinia.
Dec 1935- An agreement is made- the Hoare-Laval Plan: Italy would stop the war but 2/3 of the Ethiopian area would be given to Italy. The Ethiopian Government- this made the British government very embarrassed, though, rejected this plan.
Jan 1936- Naval and Hoare get sacked. The U.S became very angry at Britain and France and continued to sell oil to Italy.
Mar 1936- Ethiopia appealed to the League protesting about the use of chemical weapons and massacre of civilians by Italy. Hitler now began to start his plan- German troops were already moving to the Rhineland. The League did not do anything about Ethiopia’s appeal.
