In the text Leamnson sums up how to learn. He speaks of how to maintain information that you have learned. He tells us, the readers how to take notes but instead he refers to it as “making notes”. In the article Leamnson quotes that “new Knowledge depends greatly on old knowledge”. He really made us think of time and our priorities. The things we put off and say we don’t have time for are things that we simply don’t have the desire to do. Leamnson discusses the misunderstanding between studying between the teacher and the student. I like how Leamnson says the whole purpose of his writing is to help us as the student, deal with worst case scenarios. Leamnson says very clearly to Worry about your work now! He brings up the great point that all of your interest had to be learned! How can you decide you don’t like an academic subject if you have not learned it!
While reading I begin to evaluate myself as a student. Am I the typical student that claims to not have enough time or the student that only studies right before the test? I know that I knew the things that Leamnson is saying to be true, however I was not applying those things to my own work habits. Many times I have felt like I have learned a topic in school but I was missing the understanding and the remembering. I was understanding the content but I was not remembering which means I had learned nothing. Without maintaining the information and remembering what you have understood how can you say you’ve really learned anything? Many students face the question of “What have I learned?” when it comes to big end of the year test like the essay. You might have understood the process to do a certain type of math question and you may have remembered it for long enough to past that chapter test but what did you do to maintain that information? I find myself guilty of “taking notes” instead of “making notes”. I often catch myself just listening and writing and at the end of the notes not knowing anything I have written down on my paper. I got from what Leamnson was saying about knowledge is that I must know something to learn something. I am definitely one of those people that say that I don’t have enough time. Leamnson makes a great point. From Sunday to Sunday you have exactly 168 hours. In that case do I ever have enough time to do anything that is required of me? When it comes to studying I am the person that has always study right before the test. It works! Then I had to ask myself what good is that doing me? Yes, I remember the information for the test but what about after the test? This all goes back to the process of learning. Understanding, remembering and making sure you maintain that information. All students should worry about their work now! Many times I’ve been the student that waited until the end of the course to find out that I was barley passing! We as students need to make the decision that our work is important now or it will be too late to decide that it is important. How can I make up my mind that a subject is too hard or that I am not interested in it before I have understood or learned it. With dancing I faced hard times of falling and almost failing but I never gave up and that’s the new mindset I want to apply to my work.
Leamnson’s article was really an eye opener for me. It brought to my attention things that I was already lacking as a student and things that I actually realized I was lacking as a student but didn’t think twice to change anything to resolve the issues I was having. Every student everywhere can take something from this reading. I plan to do things differently going into my first year of college and this article played a great hand in that decision.
