Learning and Teachers Gentle Guidance
English is the most important language among the world. It is essential to our daily life. So, I’ve worked really hard and paid much effort in learning English at secondary school.
In my secondary education, my speaking skill has improved a lot because of teachers’ gentle guidance. I engaged in debate team at secondary academy. The tutor taught me the techniques of speaking. For example, stressing in key words so as to show the importance of those words and make impression to the listeners. Furthermore, teachers provided many chances for me to speak in the English lesson. Teachers would discuss some hot society topics like the Hong Kong president selection and stepping up of minimum wage with me. I can express my opinions freely during the lesson. It is a good opportunity for me to speak in English, enhancing my speaking.
Although teachers helped me a lot in learning English, I still met hindrances in studying English at secondary school.
Writing is my weakest part as my grammar foundation is not good. This becomes a big problem for me to learn English at secondary school. I am a bit worried as I afraid that I can’t handle the works from HKCC due to the weakness in English writing. Nevertheless, my worry is otiose. HKCC has provided me many supports to help me overcome the obstacle. In the English lesson, tutor told me that keeping a diary is a good starting point for English learner to improve their English. After listening this, I started to write a diary in English. This approach is practical, as my grammar has been obviously upgraded. Apart from this, the HKCC officer also offered a useful online learning system---Clarity. This helps me get more understanding about the usage of grammar.
As you sow, so you reap. I believe that the more effort you paid, the more you can learn. Just find an effective way for you to learn English. I have found it, do you?

Two years ago when I first came here, I encountered another unimaginable problem in my life – I understood little in class just because of my poor English. I was depressed and sighed in despair all the time. It was my mother and teachers who inspired me and gave me a lot of encouragement. They told me that difficulty was everywhere and it could accompany anybody anytime. As long as we got ready and took actions, nothing was impossible. From then on, I got up early every day to practice speaking English, listening to English and reading English. Besides, whenever I was free, I went to various markets…

I have to admit that english can become a challenge for me sometimes. I am always trying to push myself though. I have done good in english before, and I think that I can do good in english in the future. I just have to work harder than what I would in math for example. I can get caught up in the work that english requires sometimes. The assignments are very different from other classes and it is not something that I can just complete in 30 minutes. With all the work, sometimes I can procrastinate because it seems like a lot. Once I start on my assignments, I find that they aren’t as bad as they seem to be. I also think that I need to improve my grammar and participation. Participation is a problem for me in all my classes, but in the past english has always had the most discussions and assignments that require me to participate more. I am going to try to participate more in class next year, which will hopefully benefit me in all my classes, but I’d like to start with english first. Grammar isn’t really a huge problem for me, all I need to do is just practice a little more. I am hoping that I can overcome these weaknesses in the future, preferably next year in class, and improve my english skills…

English is an international language that people officially use all around the world. I have graduated from Sinjil high school in Palestine in 2009. I have decided to go back to the United States to study. It was hard for me to move to a new country after living twelve years in Palestine. My brother mentioned me to enroll in the Intensive English Language Program at University of New Orleans, that’s where he used to study. I agreed him and enrolled in this program. There was a placement test in the first day of school to choose the levels for students. I did a good job in my Grammar, listening, and reading, but bad in writing. It was my first time writing a paragraph or a sentence in English that day. I had placed in level three in writing and grammar, and level four in listening and reading.…

I am majoring in faculty of Engineering, so almost of my friends are not good in English subject. But fortunately that in secondary school I was studied in English program school, so my English was slightly better than almost of my friends. In the first semester I did not have an English class because of my o-net score is more than the standard of foundation English two, so I was passed to study foundation English three. Many of my friends told me that they don’t like English subject. It’s naturally common in engineering student. But I think the second language such as English is very important in our everyday life. In the future when we have to work or have to communicate with the foreigner, the person who have better skills in English will get more chance and gain more advantage to those who have lower skills. So, I always pay attention to every detail in English class and always practice my English skills every time I can because of the reason I told before.…

At present I’m in my second year at university. I have English classes now as well. The periods pass quite interestingly. The instructor gives us different tasks. Once we derived various words by adding prefixes or suffixes. The point was to do it as fast as possible. We also revise grammar by doing tests, learn texts, tell dialogues and take part in the conference. Surely, I don’t know the language perfectly. My weakest point is audition. It is difficult for me to know by ear what people say as they sometimes speak with fast or with pronounced accent. My another weak point is my laziness to learn new words but I try to fight it. However I have some merits. For example, I know grammar and endeavour to speak correctly and observe intonation. My studies are connected not only with calculating integrals but with writing programmes and reading different scientific articles in English, that’s why I must enlarge my vocabulary further to read books easily. To master the language fluently is what I want in the future.…
