People want to start to work on those problems, and even if there’s just a halo effect of working at Google, that’s a real benefit for us. Google has covered every aspect of what a great culture would include: innovation and autonomy, forward thinking, teamwork. To improve the performance as they look after the big buckets of feedback to see where we need to improve and all programs are designed to address the areas that have not performed well. Balancing innovation and business results goes hand in hand. The 20 percent time has been a hallmark of Google’s culture that’s attracted people to come and work on a core product. I think it’s something that continues to be important to the culture, but it’s not hard and fast. An effective leader recognizes the importance of embracing differences in people and knows how to connect the dots amongst those differences to get the best outcomes from the team. Leaders must foster a commitment from the team to embrace an innovation mindset where each employee learns to apply the differences that exists in one another for their own success and that of the organization. Innovators are those who can see, sow, grow and share the opportunities. Innovation often requires some level of risk. Highly innovative leaders initiated warm, collaborative relationships with the innovators who worked for them and they made themselves highly accessible. Leaders would cover there back if the problem arises and the honest mistakes are not punished. Innovation and workplace transformation represent two – sides of the same coin. Enable employees to adopt an “Entrepreneurial mindset” to showcase their ideas and ideals and they become the foundation for organizational growth and sustainability.
