Learning Vocabulary
I/ Introduction
Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning a language. The more words you know, the more you will be able to understand what you hear and read; and the better you will be able to say what you want to when speaking or writing.
Vocabulary refers to the words we must understand to communicate effectively. Educators often consider four types of vocabulary: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Listening vocabulary refers to the words we need to know to understand what we hear. Speaking vocabulary consists of the words we use when we speak. Reading vocabulary refers to the words we need to know to understand what we read. Writing vocabulary consists of the words we use in writing.

Vocabulary plays a fundamental role in the reading process, and contributes greatly to a reader's comprehension. A reader cannot understand a text without knowing what most of the words mean. Students learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday experiences with oral and written language. Other words are learned through carefully designed instruction.

II/ Which words to learn (FOR BEGINNERS)
Every day you hear or read many new English words. You also find them in your dictionary when you are translating from your own language. You can’t possibly learn all these new words, so your first problem is to decide which ones to concentrate on. Here are some suggestions: • learn the words that are important to the subjects you are studying • learn the words that you read or hear again and again • learn the words that you know you will often want to use yourself • do not learn words that are rare or not useful (your teacher can help you with this)

III/ The task of vocabulary learning

One way to see the overall task of vocabulary learning is through the distinction between knowing a word and using a word. In other words, the purpose of vocabulary learning should include both remembering words and the ability to use

Words are a complex element in life to define, but the best way to explain it is “words are labels for what we know” (Cleary and Linn, 577). As individuals learn words, they are not only growing their vocabulary, but also extending their overall knowledge at the same time. What is the most efficient way for one to extend his or her vocabulary and fully understand the meaning of different words? People tend to believe that knowing the definition is all that an individual needs to know about a word. There is so much more than just knowing the definition in order for someone to incorporate a word into his or her everyday communication. Teachers tend to make the mistake in just having their students memorize a definition of a word instead of having them understand the word in its context. According to the…

Comprehending text or even notes presented in class can be difficult for students with limited vocabulary, or for english as a second language students; hence, vocabulary instruction must be fully and clearly explained or demonstrated. However, with the pressure teachers are under to cover a list of standards that encompasses more subject content than they have time available to teach, they little room for isolating and teaching vocabulary to meet the needs of multiple learner abilities. Learning new vocabulary involves more than assigning students a list of words to look up and define. Teachers must be knowledgeable of and incorporate a wide variety of vocabulary specific strategies that meet the needs of learners at every ability level, and give them time to use the new words in conversations guided by the teacher, as well as reading and writing assignments, creating graphic organizers, and playing games (David 2010).…

This artifact is a lesson that was created and delivered in a Fourth Grade Language Arts and Reading Class at Palm Spring Elementary School. The lesson was aligned with the Language Arts Florida Standards. The standards based content area objectives were presented and learned through literacy based strategies and activities which supported that understanding word meaning is essential to reading success. When developing this artifact I took into account the Gardner's theory about the multiple intelligences since I use a wide variety of strategies in this lesson such as music, cooperative learning, multimedia, inner reflection, graphic organizers, and technology based on the idea that individuals learn differently, at different rates, and by different methods, so they possess distinct forms of intelligence. Reading and writing activities are dependent on…

In reading and in the content areas my students are bound to come across words they do not know the definition of. In the article, Selecting Academic Vocabulary Words Worth Learning, it says academic vocabulary practice should be an essential part to a literacy lesson because vocabulary and comprehension go hand and hand (Townsend & Kierman, 2015). Knowing vocabulary and comprehension are linked, I want to give my students the opportunity to learn strategies to figure out new words and content related words in the texts and books they will be reading. In the article, Teaching Vocabulary, it says vocabulary drills are very isolated and you want to give the students the opportunities to see the vocabulary in authentic texts (Diamond & Gutlohn, 2006). Diamond and Gutlohn (2006) says having the students go beyond defining a word causes them to think about word parts and helps connect words to each…
