GIRAFFES - Lee Downie

“Four Eyes!”

“Giraffe Neck!”

“You stink”

“You look like a boy”

“Shut up ugly, I hate you, I hate you!” Kayla shouts to the boy living in the house on the opposite side of the street. Every morning just before lunchtime the kids would come out of their houses onto their porches and hurl insults at each other, making them hate each other more and more each day.

A few weeks ago Kayla and Kyle were playmates but that all changed when Kyle threw Kayla’s cabbage patch doll onto the roof. A cold war ensued between them turning the once happy friendship into a surprisingly large amount of hatred for a couple of 5-year-olds.

“I’m sorry Kyle. I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

It’s true, whenever their daily war erupts, the two wouldn’t ever get hurt by each other's insults to the point where one of them would be crying. To be honest, Kayla hates seeing people cry, especially when it’s her best friend Kyle. She pats his back and pulls away. “Stop crying now, idiot,” she says in a lighter tone than before.

“I’m sorry Kayla” Kyle sniffles, wiping his puffy eyes with his

It was then that she understood that not all memories need to be happy or joyful, they can be both. American University psychologist Nathaniel Herr said, "Being able to recognize that our memories aren't just simply good or bad, but have different sides to them, is a way people cope with their complicated lives," (Weller, 2015). This idea of reframing helped the emotions to work together to help bring Riley home. When she came home the first thing she did was hug her parents. She started crying and these tears were sad at first, but then she was happy to be home so they became happy tears. From then on whenever a memory was created it’s memory bubble in her brain would be more the one color, proving it’s okay to not be happy all the time like she once…

Sadly, its not uncommon for drug filled places to be abusive places as well. For the most part Kayla wasn't hurt badly, maybe a few bruises, but that didn't change what the child had to see. The memories she repressed of watching her father beat on her mommy, among other things, still effected who she was. The child was taken away when she was six, both parents arrested, and sent to stay with her mothers sister in the southern part of North Carolina.…
