The Legacy of Maya Angelou Maya Angelou, an inspirational American author, poet, and civil rights activist, was born on April 4, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri, and died on May 28, 2014 at the age of 86. Growing up, Angelou endured an abounding number of hardships from racism to sexism and poverty. However, regardless of the numerous hardships she encountered throughout her life, she still managed to be successful. Angelou received several honors for her outstanding literary work. Maya Angelou is a significant American because she prevailed against all obstacles and strived to become a positive role model for others. Throughout all of her works, she writes about personal identity, race, sex and society. She writes like she is telling a story, and all good storytellers use vivid descriptions; Maya Angelou was the queen of description. She was closely concerned with describing the world around her with her senses. She wrote with the feelings of the sight, sounds, touch, and the smells of her surroundings. That 's the great thing about Maya Angelou: she never wastes her words. Her style is beautiful and might seem elaborate, but everything she writes is for a reason (Shmoop). Many people have been inspired by Maya Angelou. Her tenacious words and her firm beliefs influenced so many people and continue to influence people today. President Barrack Obama stated shortly after she passed, “I join millions around the world in remembering one of the brightest lights of our time — a brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman” (Fox). This strong, inspirational, and talented woman remains a significant figure in the history of American Literature and her legacy will carry on for many years to come in the
