The UN is divided into 6 principal organs. ‘Security council’ and ‘General Assembly’ being the two main ones. The General Assembly consisted of members that meet to discuss resolution to issues such as Syria, which they are strongly attempting to bring to peace.
The security council consists of 5 permanent members which take actions similar to The General Assembly. Permanent members such as France, United States and Russsia are involved in working together at the moment to find a solution for the Syria Crisis, which is clear evidence of the UN working hard in developing international law to maintain peace within nations.
The Security Council and General Assembly elect 15 judges that The international court of Justice consists of. The ICJ can deal with disputes between nations but cannot enforce its ruling and can only hear disputes where the nations accepts the jurisdiction of the court. The ICJ addresses the human rights council during its debate on the situation of the Human rights in Syrian Arab Republic, which indicates the UN’s recognition of Human rights.
The International Criminal Court has a jurisdiction that covers the most serious of crimes, but only applies to states that agree to be subject. Meaning the ICC would have authority over Syria only if Syria refers itself. Although in this case the state has authority, the UN has a huge impact on international Law and are very eager to resolve issues and maintain peace between nations.
