Legalization Of Marijuana Argumentative Analysis

Marijuana has multiple benefits that can be observed so far that could be used to help better society. To begin did you know that in the year 2014 there were nearly 1 million people arrested for possession of marijuana alone (Drug Policy Alliance)? We have also seen lowering crime rate trends with the legalization of marijuana in Colorado(New schools, less crime). Marijuana also has the ability to replace several over the counter prescription medication (Stonercookbook). Marijuana so far is also a valid taxable good that we could take advantage of to boost our economy greatly(P.,& Aleem, Z). If marijuana was legalized we would hopefully start to see lowering crime rates on a federal level, more money in our economy and the use of an alternative medication.
Since Colorado is a smaller state the numbers are smaller but imagine if it was legalized on a federal level how the numbers would grow. They have so far seen homicides drop by 50%, car break-ins 36% and sexual assaults by 14% since the legalization of marijuana(Legalization Recreational Marijuana). In Denver, Colorado they have also observed a 3% decrease in traffic fatalities making the roads safer to drive (DrugPolicyAlliance). This helps show that there might be a correlation between the legalization of marijuana and safer driving possibly showing that people are either being safer or finding alternative means of transportation. With less crime, we could start to fund the justice system less and focus spending on other programs such as education, Drug abuse prevention, Planned Parenthood the possibilities are endless. With the legalization of marijuana on a federal scale we would hopefully start to crime rates lower in every state and not just
