Gideon v. Wainwright, a case involving a indigent man by the name Clarence Gideon, who couldn’t afford an attorney to advocate for him when he was charged with breaking an entry, a felony in the state of Florida. This case not only changed America when the supreme court ruled the government must provide free counsel to accused criminals who cannot afford counsel for themselves, this case as also had a huge impact on my family life and in my decision making when it came to my career path.…
A Child Called “It” is a very tragic book that tells an amazingly true story about a real life little boy in California. Written by Dave Pelzer, the story reveals an extreme case of child abuse, one of the worst ever report in California history. A Child Called “It” tells the unbearable story of a boy who gets beaten day after day by his alcoholic mother. This story is an autobiography communicating very informative information of the severity of child abuse and how important school officials are in spotting this epidemic. Dave came from a typically good family. Dave’s parents loved him deeply, especially on holidays and special trips into town while his father was working a twenty-four hour shift. However, things began to change drastically in a negative way. A Child Called “It” focuses mainly on abuse in…
Legal marriage is a matter of essential universal and equal rights. Despite all, fairness and dignity of gay couples should be respected. Here are some ethical and social arguments for the legislation of gay marriage that would benefit us all. Studies have constantly revealed that married people tend to be better off financially, emotionally, psychologically and even medically. Moreover, psychologically, the feature of marriage establishes official and public relationships that make it easier for people to support each other, giving them the capability and skill to grow stronger. The support can be on different levels, especially in hard situations like medical issues. The chosen life partner would be able to take things in charge. Moreover, we all know that gay couples adopt babies. When it would come to adopting and raising the children, they would be living in a steady married household making them feel like any other of their classmates. In addition allowing same sex marriage would assist to a better integration of their relationships into society. Therefore, if two people are committed and are able to create a suitable union and provide love and care for their families then why not let them marry? It would do good to the stability and consistency of our society in…
Gay marriage should be legal because as woman and man, all individuals have the same right in society; because same-sex couples can constitute a good based family; because it is just a way to make official a common union nowadays, even with the religious issue; because it is not related to polygamy; and because love matters and it does not differ in nature according to the sex of its object or the person who experiences it.…
Could you imagine if you had met the ideal person you wished to share your entire life with but the law would not allow you to? That is the position that many homosexual Australians have been in since the settlement of this country. Same sex marriage is currently not allowed in Australia but I and a proven 60% of other Australians strongly believe it should be. Gay people pay taxes, serve in the military, participate in the workforce, are our neighbors, friends and family. Logic and decency would suggest that they should have the right to marry, just as any heterosexual couple can. However, there are people who disagree with this belief, take for example the government, namely Australia’s prime minister, Julia Gillard, several religious groups who believe marriage should be kept between a man and a woman and those who simply wish to deny the happiness of two people in love because of their anatomy.…
According to a census provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of same sex couples has risen drastically between the years 2006 and 2011 with a 32% increase. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011) This law has a detrimental impact on the homosexual demographic because through no fault of their own, they are incapable of fulfilling all required criteria to marry. It can be argued that their love is the same, their union is the same and yet they are not afforded the same legal right to marry, again a fact that seems considerably outdated and not aligned with the modern society we live in…
Everybody should have the right to a legally recognized union with a partner of their choice. The debate over whether or not people in same sex relationship should be allowed to marry, or even enter into civil unions is no new fight. Legalizing gay marriage has brought a new trend which then providing the arguments on supporting gay marriage such as denying them is a violation of religious freedom and minority discrimination encourages people to have strong family values and constitute a good based family as well as giving up high-risk sexual lifestyles. Homosexuality is an accepted lifestyle nowadays with most evidence proving biological causation, and marriage benefits should be available to all couples.…
In conclusion to gay marriage they are all human and deserve equal rights. They deserve to be treated just like everyone no matter what gender. Just because religion institutions rule out gay marriage, the government should not deny homosexuals their rights, they all deserve to be happy. In the end gay marriage will not only be an advantage for the homosexuals but for many other people who can benefit from their…
First of all, gay marriage should be legalized because it is unfair and unconstitutional to deny citizens this human right. President Obama said, “Every single American-gay, straight, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender-deserve to be treated equally in the eyes of the law and in the eyes of our society. It is pretty simple proposition” (Qtd. in Skiba 1). Gays and lesbians should have the right to do everything heterosexuals do without being judged. They should have the right to love, marry, and to choose whom they want as life partners. According to Andrew Sullivan, author of “Why Gay Marriage is Good for Straight America”, “Even political rights, like the right to vote, and nearly all other rights enumerated in the constitution, are secondary to the inalienable human right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence; and to this category the right to home and marriage unquestionably belongs” (2). All men are created equally. Each and every individual has the right to life,…
Some of the disadvantages that are evident is that as society’s views continue to change more and more changes to the legislation are being put forward which could result in an uproar in society. Another disadvantage could be the fact that people who are not in a fully committed marriage our are a same-sex couple will not be recognised as a valid marriage unless the legislation is changed but the change in legislation will give same-sex couples certain privleges or rights that hetrosexual couples will not have. Wikipedia.org states that the foreign marriage certificate is proof of marriage and marriages need not be registered. However section 88EA states that marriages performed in another country between a man and another man or a woman and another woman must not be recognised as a marriage in Australia. As said before there are a number of advantages and disadvantages but what recommendations or agreements could be made to keep society from conflicting with the Australian…
The debate of gay marriage is very complex, due to the many different feelings people express on the topic. One opinion is that gay marriage should be legalized nationally. Others feel that gay marriage should not be legalized but civil unions should be granted to homosexuals so they have an alternative that allows gays and lesbians to receive something that compares to the same rights as marriage. On the other hand there is a large group that believes neither gay marriage nor civil unions should be offered to gay and lesbian couples and that any legal union should be available to heterosexual couples only. The different opinions that are expressed by society’s attitudes towards gay marriage continue to cause great controversy throughout the country, and should come to a halt by allowing homosexuals to wed.…
Marriage is the formal union of a man and a woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife. However, in an article “Gay Marriages: Make Them Legal” by Thomas B. Stoddard is talking about the marriage of gays and the author try to argue for gay marriages. Just only reading title, we can see how strong of this argument, because Stoddard have showed us many evidences that can support his point of view.…
There are many complex issues in our society today such as same sex marriage. Generally, no answer is black or white, right or wrong. However due to wording in the federal law such as that in the Marriage Act 1961, same sex marriage is deemed illegal. However due to pressure from groups such as Australian Marriage Equality the issue of legalising same sex marriage has been brought to attention of the public which in turn pressures the government to legalise same sex marriage. The question is, should it be legalised or not?…
Firstly, several countries around the world have legalized gay marriage, so why shouldn’t Australia follow? Currently fourteen out of a hundred and ninety four countries have legalized it, ranging from the Netherlands (2000), Belgium (2003), Canada (2005), Spain (2005), South Africa (2006) and many more. New to join this list is France, who has just recently made their mark in history for the gay community. There are also several states within countries which have legalized it, such as the United States and Mexico. Governments all around the world are listening to their people, considering and even intending to the legalize same-sex marriages. Whether the people demand it or it seems inevitable, gay marriages will continue to grow and be accepted globally by various cultures and governments.…
Gay Marriage. It’s a controversial issue. There is much debate here in Australia on the issue and we constantly hear discussions, new reports and arguments on the subject. Australia plays host to one of the biggest gay and lesbian carnivals in the world, held in Sydney, every year bringing the issue to the fore in every media outlet in the country. The opinions are varied on the subject and often get treated with much emotion and passion, by both sides of the argument. I too, have an opinion. It’s parallel to the views laid out in the very foundations of my Christian faith.…
