Dear Mr. President,
We, the Dominican society, salute respectfully while we publicly recognize your efforts of directing a public function in a efficient, dynamic and transparent way and your dedication to achieve a more prosperous nation and filled with opportunities for all. In recent months the country has been the scene of a just and necessary debate on the economics and environmental benefits, advantages and disadvantages of mining contract signed between the State and the Company Dominican old town Barrick Gold Corporation.
I know, that all Dominicans of goodwill, those who believe that the national interest is above parties, groups and interests, were deeply satisfied with the decision last February 27, regarding the company Barrick Gold while us were against this final decision made. No matter, President, that certain segments of society, with economic power now want to make the argument that "legal security" to justify the shameful contract, when thanks to the legal security they have here been able to increase their fortunes without thinking of the hundreds of thousands of poor people in this country. Nothing is above the interest of the country, interest in making money, that's what you showed and that's what concerns us most.
Barrick Gold has worked against everything we’ve worked so hard for to build and the government seems to give such little importance about this problem we are facing and who gets affected during this process or the damage it’s causing. This gold mining company is one of the biggest threats to destroy human health and agricultural population in the Northeast. The consequences that this evil company produces are: theft, fraud, eviction peasant of the environment: water pollution, poisoning of animals, and destruction of
