|On arrival to my workplace, I knocked the front door for entry into the building. The front door remains locked | | |
|at all times to avoid any intruders or unknown persons from entering the building. This is in line with the | | |
|National Care Standards for Care homes for Children and Young People which cite ‘privacy’ as an important | | |
|principle in order to maintain “your right to have your privacy and property respected; and be free from | | |
|unnecessary intrusion.” After being allowed entry by a fellow staff member into the building, it was evident | | |
|that the unit was unsettled as there was a lot of shouting going on. In order that I knew the events that had | | |
|led up to this and did not become involved in a situation that I was unsure of, thereby putting myself and the | | |
|young person at risk, I received a changeover from another member of staff who had been on the previous shift. | | |
|This is essential before every shift as it ensures the consistency of the service provided to the young people | | |
|and team work is a necessity when working in the care sector. According to the Quarriers standard on Teamwork, | | |
|effective internal communication requires “getting the right information to the right people at the right time.”| | |
|This also ensured that I could assess the situation successfully and plan the shift ahead. After changeover, it | | |
|emerged that John had spoken to his mum this morning who had told him that she did not want his home contact to | | |
|go ahead due to his previous behaviours the night before. John is a 14-year-old boy who is reliant on contact | | |
|with his mum and granddad. According to Attachment Theory (Bowlby, 1958), the importance of the child’s | | |
|relationship with their mother is paramount in terms of their social, emotional and cognitive development. John | | |
|is known to engage in other young people’s negative behaviour and can be easily led. These at-risk behaviours | | |
|are cited in John’s Behaviour Support Plan.
These are used in order that staff are aware of the types of events | | |
|or behaviours that john may struggle with and so that they can react effectively. Repeated attempts to ensure | | |
|John’s safety have been made including the prevention of other young people into his room and providing him with| | |
|his own personal room key. These attempts were made in order to make John feel safe and were in line with the | | |
|National Care Standards. However, despite these attempts to respect John’s privacy, John continues to be easily | | |
|influenced and allows other young people into his room. It was evident that John became distressed with | | |
|prolonged periods within the unit and so the withdrawal of his home contact had a huge impact on his emotional | | |
|wellbeing. It was apparent that communication with John was extremely important to ensure that John knew that | | …show more content…
|
|staff members were there to talk to. I also felt that it was important to speak with John’s mum in order that an| | |
|understanding could be made fully about why the contact was cancelled as according to Quarriers Standard on | | |
|working in partnership with family members and carers, it is a commitment to take seriously the views of | | |
|families and carers, while recognising that the welfare of the person being supported is paramount.
John’s mum | | |
|was adamant that she was unhappy with having contact with John when he had been displaying negative behaviour | | |
|within the unit. After this phone call was made, I went to speak to John and he seemed to have calmed down at | | |
|this point as was no longer shouting. I asked if he would like to speak to me and he agreed. John told me that | | |
|he felt extremely let down by his mother and could not understand her reasoning for cancelling his contact with | | |
|her. He seemed to relax after speaking to someone about his feeling and when I asked if he would like to help me| | |
|with making dinner, he accepted. I had previously carried out Food Hygiene Training so was able to do this. It | |
|
|was decided that we would make chicken fajitas. Firstly, the kitchen surfaces were wiped down and disinfected | | |
|and both I and John washed our hands. We then both put on aprons. This is in line with the Food Hygiene and | | |
|Healthy Eating Standard which cites that a safe, clean and hygienic working environment is part of daily good | | |
|practice. We then prepared our ingredients by setting out the correct chopping board for the correct ingredient | | |
|(i.e. red for raw chicken and brown for vegetables). This is in line with the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene)| | |
|Regulations 1995. I then went to retrieve 2 sharp knives which are kept in a locked cabinet in the office for | | |
|safety reasons. These are also counted every night and a list is kept to ensure that no knives go missing. A | | |
|Risk Assessment must be carried out for each individual young person when dealing with sharp knives. According | | |
|to the Quarriers Risk Assessment Standard, these must be signed off by the Project Manager or departmental | | |
|equivalent and who remains accountable at all times for that risk assessment and its control measures. This had | | |
|previously been done on John and this stated that John could be trusted with sharp knives in the presence of | | |
|staff members. Once the food had been cooked, it had to be probed to ensure it was at the correct temperature. | | |
|According to the Food Hygiene and Healthy eating Standard, a temperature probe is essential. According to the | | |
|Food Safety Regulations (1995), the food should have been about 75 degrees which it was and so it was deemed | | |
|safe to eat. This temperature was recorded in a daily temperature recording sheet. All equipment was then washed| | |
|and disinfected and I sat down to enjoy the meal with John and the other boys. | | |
