1. Introduction to English Lexicology
Lexicology – the study of the stock of words in any given language (Lexis, Vocabulary, Lexicon); it includes all the words that exist and once existed in a language.
If we study the vocabulary of a language at a certain point in its existence, that means that we take a descriptive approach and we speak of synchronic lexicology. If on the contrary, we study the vocabulary of a language in its development over time, that means that we take a historical approach and we speak of a diachronic lexicology.
Lexicology is only one possible level of analysis of language the other levels are organized hierarchically starting with:
Phonetics and Phonology => (sounds/phonemes)
Grammar
Semantics
Word – Giving a proper definition to the word has been a challenge for lexicologists because no matter how comprehensive they tried to be, there always exist some items in language that are considered words by the native speakers of that language, but they do not fit into the definition.
An association of meaning(s) and a graphic/sound form that can be used grammatically in communication.

head – LEXEME = ENTRY
