In The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia trap lector given by scholar and author Stephanie Coontz discusses all the myths and facts of what is new and old in marriage and families. Many things that we consider to be relatively new to what our concepts of what we believe marriage to be are in fact old and have been around for centuries. The lecture that Coontz gave was extremely interesting and informative. She first touch on what is new and what is, in fact, not new, to families or marriages. The list of things that we think are new that is in fact not is: 1 parent families, step families, high divorce rates, and sex outside of marriage.…
It had humor, real life events, sadness, and suspense. I would most definitely recommend this novel to someone because although it’s very long, you won’t want to stop reading it. This book will make you wonder, cry, even laugh. It’s a book that I think had great meaning and was put together very well. In my opinion, there is no flaws about this book except how long it is.…
Life as We Knew it by Susan Beth Pfeffer starts out with a society much like our own in the United States. People are excited for their futures and hopeful of what is to come. After the moon is knocked out of orbit the world goes into a panic and is chaotic. The hopefulness towards the future is declined as the conditions get worse. Everyone is trying to do what is best for their family.…
The first thoughts I had about the text were very surprising to me because I actually thought the topic was interesting and very captivating. The author’s style really motivated me to pay attention to details and the story. I also enjoyed how descriptive she is when recalling her events because it helps make the text interesting to digest.…
I enjoyed this book thoroughly and always kept me intrigued until the end. It had small twists in it that were rather easy to interpret but it was also very interesting. I don’t particularly relate to this book, although situations that I’ve endured have changed my perspective on life, in a positive aspect, and made me unprejudiced and versatile and not so…
The book is told in a circuitous way; I found the jumping back and forth in time a bit distracting, but more off-putting was the way Xeones forecasts an event or subplot before narrating it in detail later. Already knowing how Thermopylae turned out, I was hoping for some suspense in the details, but there too Pressfield tells us the end before getting started on the story…
I wouldn't recommend this book to the average reader. It is a bit hard to read because the author goes into so much depth that the reader could very often forget the main idea. It is a good, informative book but a bit drawn out.…

In the dystopian novel, Life As We Knew It, by Susan Beth Pfeffer the world looks like it’s coming to an end. An asteroid has hit the moon, knocking it into a closer orbit which completely throws off the weather and 17 year old Miranda Evans normal life. The asteroid causes all kinds of disasters that bring the world to a halt. Without grocery stores, heat, water, and limited food, Miranda and her family face problems together and struggle to survive. One theme I noticed in this book is things are a lot easier to accomplish when you work together.…
Time was running out. Stakes were high. It was supposed to be a particular day for everyone including Miranda, a typical teenage girl. As usual, she went to school, then went home with the knowledge that an asteroid was to hit the moon later in the day. At first, nothing seemed to have happen until a noise almost like a sonic boom erupted from the sky. The moon appeared closer than ever in an eerie, unnatural sort of way. Almost suddenly, Earth was hit with tornadoes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. Out of the many people who witnessed this event, Miranda stayed strong and fought her way through the epidemic, even through the roughest of times.…
In every living being we are given the ability to lie when something happens to us or other actions that fall upon us. This ability can be useful when something unexpected happens and theres is no choice but to lie. However, lying to cover up something that is harmful or important can have it's own consequences for that action alone. There have been many debates over whether or not lying is a justifiable action to take when something comes up. Some argue that lying is wrong action to take because it's just prolonging the mistake that was made. While others believe that it is acceptable if it’s in the right circumstance to use. I believe that lying is acceptable because the things we do are own consequences and we have to keep it as are own…
