Life Brand Milk Of Magnesia Lab Report
For this lab, we had to figure out which antacid was the most effective out of all 3 of them. To figure out which one was the most effective, the antacid which took the most amount of drops of Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) to neutralize the antacid would be most effective. Based on the results, Life Brand Milk of Magnesia was the most effective out of the three antacids because it took 120 drops of hydrochloric acid (HCl) to neutralize the antacid. The active ingredient in Life Brand Milk of Magnesia is magnesium hydroxide (“Nonprescription Medicines and Products - Antacids and Acid Reducers”). Magnesium hydroxide is a strong base with a pH value of 12 (“Strong and Weak Acids and Bases and Their Salts”). A chemical equation to show the reaction between the active ingredient and hydrochloric acids would be: Magnesium Hydroxide + Hydrochloric Acid→ Magnesium Chloride + Water. I believed that Life Brand Milk of Magnesia would be the least effective because it’s the cheapest and is non branded. But, Life Brand Milk of Magnesia was the most effective in the ending. Life Brand required 120 drops of hydrochloric acid to neutralize the effect. In my opinion, I believed that Diovol Plus AF would be most effective because it had magnesium hydroxide and it was the most expensive. I thought that the expensive the antacid is, the most effective it would be. Diovol Plus AF required the least amount of HCl drops which was the least effective antacid out of all 3 of the antacids. My hypothesis was incorrect as it was the weakest antacid. My hypothesis was way off from what the result was.
