Light and Alabama Electric Cooperative
The Life of Powersouth

Have you ever known that feeling of waking up in the middle of the night, eyes barely cracked open and all you could see was darkness. NOT thinking of “Turn on the lights!” Do you know the feeling of having to watch a candle flame go until the wax puddle takes over the form of the candle. Yes, i know what its like to be without light. My name is Ruby Jewel. I lived in Lower South Alabama in 1941. For the longest I had no light whatsoever. I just couldn't wait until that day where light would be my new friend. I knew it would be here soon. I just had that feeling in my gut. When my lights were on for the first time of my life, off course i didn't know what this thing was glowing out. I was young and not very sure. The first thought in my was “Oh, thats just another type of candle, until my mother told me otherwise. I'm older now, and I'm much more smarter. Ever since that light ever first turned on, it became a very nice friend to me. i do everything under this special light. I eat, sit , write, read, clean, etc. I still live in this same little town under the name of Andalusia, and my light are still powered the same way. It all started when a couple of representatives from cooperatives in Alabama decide to come together and start an organization. The organization was all about building it own generating facilities and selling electricity to their cooperatives. First known as Alabama Electric Cooperative, better known as AEC. They change their name to Powersouth on January 1, 2001, to better reflect themselves. They generate power then distribute to their fellow cooperatives. Powersouth is a generating and transmission cooperative, which is shortened to G&T. Electricity you see, did become one of my many friends. Until i get so tired and weary from being seen all day, i just want to hide into the darkness. Thats to the point where i flip my little switch, and the light has becomes my catharsis because the light is no more. That is

I arrive home late one night. I walk up to the front door. I dig through my purse to find my keys to unlock the door. Once I do that I reach inside the door to turn the light switch on only to discover to my dismay that it does not come on. I walk into the kitchen to check that light. Great it works. This revolutionary source of light has enabled society to become more productive and guards lives from calamities. While the lightbulb may appear to be an ancient invention, it still benefits society today by increasing production before sunrise and late into the shadowy depths of the evening. Many people work evening shifts that would be impossible without the lightbulb's radiant energy imitating the sun's glorious rays. With the lack of light in these darkened hours, poverty would inevitably increase due to the loss of jobs providing necessary funds.…

One of the benefits of investing in this $100 million project includes rerouting power around bottlenecked lines. This allows Xcel Energy to deliver electricity to areas in Boulder that have a very high demand that the previous conventional electrical grid was unable to service effectively. This smart-grid system also enables Xcel Energy to detect and reduce power outages, identify false alarms more quickly and read customer meters remotely. This in return will lead to a reduction in the number of times the service crews are sent out to those locations, thus making the service crews more productive. Combining the efficiency of the smart-grid electrical system and the reduction of outages will allow Xcel Energy to capture cost-savings more appropriately.…

The Federal Energy Agency started energy deregulation in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, mostly because many local energy companies such as New York’s RG&E, had formed monopolies, they also felt that these companies were using outdated, inefficient generating plants. Consumers had no choice, and were forced to pay escalated energy costs based on solo area providers. It has taken several years and a lot of red tape, but 3rd party energy service companies known as ESCOs, were finally let into the marketplace to compete for your business. Energy is now regulated by some states, only about 22 states; including New York…

The cycle is endless. I struggle to get up, to get up to face the mirror, to face the world. I walk in the dark with my eyes closed, avoiding any light, and living in an abyss full of my fears. With the last of my strength I manage to turn the switch on; the fluorescent light washes my face away, highlights the unwanted curves and hits my rib cage just strong enough so I’m able to count each one. This is what it has come to, a constant reign of dark over light, of fear over happiness. It’s where the line is drawn between health and obsession.…
