LIGHTING ACTION

PART ONE

The Incident
In June 2008, SYARIKAT GETAH BAGUS SDN BHD faced a series of actions by its employees who are members of the National Union of Employees of Rubber Goods (NUERG).

The Tyre Division of the Company was plagued by increasing absenteeism, malingering and production delays on the part of the tyre operators. The Production Manager, Mr. John Ho, alarmed over the deteriorating state of production performance had expressed concern at a recent company conference of Department Heads (10 June 2008) as to whether he could adequately meet the quotas required while ensuring at the same time the quality and reliability of the products especially tyres.

The decline in quality and failure in meeting production requirements had given rise to many complaints from customers and dealers who had asked the Supplies Manager to replace tyres, which had hardly been on the road for three months. A massive number of rejects had been received for replacement as well as from the Inspectorate Unit.

On 12 June 2008, John Ho, who was very perturbed over the decline in production as well as productivity, called into his office the Worksite Chairman, Tan See Seng, a senior operator with eighteen years’ service. John Ho was under much pressure as he had also received another special order (the previous week) for production of 10, 000 truck tyres for the government. An official from the Ministry of Labour’s Industrial Relations Department had met representatives of the Company and the Union, only a week ago, to stress the importance of this order, which was urgent and had to be accorded priority.

The following conversation ensued:-

John Ho: Look here, See Seng. I am fed up with the current situation in Tyre Production. We cannot meet the Middle East orders fully at this rate. What has become of your men this month and in May? Complaints about poor performance and sidewall patching are increasing. Rejects are mounting up and

There are four main issues that have resulted in major company problems. The first is the resiliency of the company culture. Problems such as low productivity cannot be properly addressed unless the culture is capable of changing to promote the necessary changes. The second major cause is the inability to monitor and measure performance. Thirdly, the company has not properly determined who needs what training. In addition, the mechanics’ past injuries have contributed to absenteeism. Finally, the old fleet of buses is unreliable and has left passengers stranded or caused them to be late.…

Within the world’s largest oil and gas metal tubular manufacturing facility, metrics were maintained in all aspects of the business to include; production, safety, quality, logistics, budget, etc. Historically, the 200 acre facility, with 30 or so departments, 40 buildings and an average 800 plus employees prided itself on its production capability as well as meeting customer demands for a quality product with on-time deliveries. Within a few years the growing pressure to improve the safety statistics moved it to the number one priority with no less demand for production efficiencies and demand on employee performance to do more with less. As a result, there was an increased demand on each and every employee to adopt new policies, procedures, practices, and workload. This in turn caused poor employee morale, less internal customer satisfaction and poor metrics across the board.…

The major weakness of Canadian Tire is that in the past, they have periodically lost their focus on customer service. They have taken their customers for granted, assuming that the customer would always return to the store regardless of how they were treated. Because of this, they have occasionally lost market share. The company has also failed to recognize the changing demographic of Canada (immigration, different cultures). The stores tend to focus on their historical customer – the adult white male. They have failed to widen their focus to women and different nationalities such as Chinese and Indian customers. Another weakness of the company is its failure to expand successfully beyond Canada. This has put limits on the company’s growth.…

I was able to attend Lightwire and was impressed by there use of lighting, movement and sound. The story itself was told mostly through visuals, which added to the experience itself. However, I loved there use of movement throughout the show because even though there was no dialogue I was engaged and was aware of what was going on through the movements of the characters. Colors were used effectively by having the antagonist be red and the good guys green, there use of music helped a lot as well, in creating the mood of the story. For example during serious parts the music would shift right before the story would continue, making you anticipate what was about to happen. The only time I was confused as to what was happening, was when the blue…
