Lipid Diet Experiment
The aim of the experiment was to examine the effects that having a rich lipid diet had on the CHO and fat metabolism during the prolonged exercise. The data shows that at rest the body was in a heavy fat metabolism and when exercise started there was a shift of metabolism from fat to CHO. After thirty minutes, the metabolism shifted back to a primary metabolism of fat. Examining the data from this experiment to other studies showed a similar result. Frielander, Casazza, Horning, Buddinger, and Brooks (1998) executed a similar experiment where females exercised for an hour at 45 and 65% of their VO2 max and the results showed that at the first fifteen minutes of exercise the fat oxidation decreased, an increase in CHO metabolism, and the blood glucose concentration decreased. The significance of this plasma glycerol means that the body is in lipolysis (fatty acid breakdown). Glycerol has been identified as a tracer enzyme for lipolysis because muscle cannot breakdown glycerol. So the glycerol has to be transported to the liver to be turned into energy. The breakdown of fats is not instant because skeletal muscle has to receive the fatty acids from the blood to break it down. In the fifteen minutes, the body has to tap into a fuel source so sustain the energy and that fuel source is the glycogen and glucose (which is located in the skeletal muscle). Frielander, Casazza, Horning, Buddinger, and Brooks reported that throughout the hour of the exercise all the subjects reported an increase in glycerol. This data shows true with what was seen in our experiment. Even though we did not test for glycerol, we can see that after the fifteen minutes the fat metabolism percentage increased. At the fifteen minute mark, the fat metabolism was at 34% and had an average fat percentage of 50.6% after the initial fifteen
