I am writing this letter to you to inform you about work related stress and to make suggestions to you on how to handle this problem. Being the head of the Oncology department I am sure that you would like your department to run as smooth as possible. Having a policy in place to deal with stress at work that should focus on six areas such as demands, control, support, relationships, role and change.
Stress at work is one of the leading causes of people being off sick. The majority of people experience stress at some point during their working life. There is no such thing as 'good' stress, but some people find it more tolerable than others. When stress becomes enough of a problem to affect your ability to carry out your work or other day-to-day tasks, or to enjoy things you have previously liked, it can become a disability like any other mental health condition.
Stress is a highly personalized phenomenon and can vary widely even in identical situations for different reasons. One survey showed that having to complete paper work was more stressful for many police officers than the dangers associated with pursuing criminals. The severity of job stress depends on the magnitude of the demands that are being made and the individual’s sense of control or decision-making latitude he or she has in dealing with them. Scientific studies based on this model confirm that workers who perceive they are subjected to high demands but have little control is at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.
Demands at work can have a profound effect on a person while they are working. As a medical assistant we perform a variety of duties, from scheduling patients to assisting with minor surgery.
