Memories I have with reading books (all positive)

*The first thing I remember about my childhood reading is my mom putting up this tent in my room and she just read a bunch of story books to me and we spent all day in that tent in my bedroom.

*It wasn’t until fourth grade I was introduced to mystery books. There was a bookstore at my school and one of my friends convinced me to get a book I thought was really weird, but then I read it and it ended up being one of my favorite books. After the exhilarating experience of going on the adventure of May Bird, I wanted to read more and more mystery books. I found that I also loved action books, Cracker.

*When I was younger you would always find me with a book….probably because my dad said that for every page I read he would give me a penny…so I would always be reading to get money!

*When I would spend the night with my sister she would always read books before she went to bed and I would draw a picture or pretend to read also…now I have to read a book in order to be able to fall asleep and that brings back to when I was little and always saw my sister reading and me falling asleep to her lamp shining brightly and her leaned up against the wall reading the next greatest Romantic novel.

*Reading in the car on my way to soccer games…”dad always saying readers are leaders” this encouraged me to want to read even more.

Books that have stuck with me:

*Authentic Beauty- My sister gave me this book and it helped me a lot because I learned through it how I should treat guys, or act around them so they will treat me well. And It has helped me to not settle and have greater expectations for guys.

*The Hunger Games Series- definitely one of the best books I have ever read because I have never actually read a whole series and the book was just perfect for me because I loved the action and adventure

*Maze Runner-Action

When I was about a year old, my parents would calm me down at night with bedtime stories. I grew to expect and enjoy this routine as I got older. My book choices for a night time story were varied and moved from Dr. Seuss to a biography on Abraham Lincoln almost nightly. If I was to take a book, no matter the topic, off of our book shelves my parents would read it to me. As I got older, I relished in the fact that I could read the books myself by the age 5 and did not have to wait for bedtime to be read to.…

and somehow I magically could read books. Of course, the ability to read did not just magically occur. From the very beginning of my life my parents and grandparents have read me stories. There are many photographs of my family or family friends reading to me, my eyes intently staring at the illustrations on the pages of a Sandra Boynton book or my earliest favorite; books about trucks. My earliest memory of literacy as a young boy was spending time with my mother, reading a variety of picture books.…

Penmanship was the first to spark my interest in literacy, but the words and descriptive details my mom and dad would read in our bedtime stories also struck a fire in the desire to know more. I remember “camping” with my best friend, who was also my next door neighbor, in our backyards telling ghost stories. Holding a flashlight up under my chin, I’d start in a mysterious voice, “Once upon a time, there were three little pigs,” telling a very short version of the three little pigs. I would struggle to remember the details of the story to make it spooky. I knew words like “big and bad,” describing the wolf, meant he was scary. These simple details in my childhood were essentially the beginning building blocks to my literary future.…

I remember when I was young and my grandmother decided to take me to the library with her. She put me into “The Little Readers Club” while she went off to look for books to read. In the club we were told to look for a book and read it and then share what the book was about. I remember getting up and look at all the shelves filled with thousands and thousands of books. I remember thinking, “how could a person write so much and not run out of words?” putting aside my curiousity, I searched for a book and found a book called “Spaghetti in a hot dog bun.” After I picked the book I came and sat down and saw all the other kids smiling and reading their books like they were professionals as I sat there not knowing how to read at all. I felt dumb at the moment and unfit, so all I did was look at the pictures and try to come up with what I thought the story was about. When it came to sharing time; I was too embarrassed to tell the club leader that I didn’t read my story because I couldn’t read. So when it came to my turn to share my story I stood up and said, “My book is about a girl that likes….uh…” I just stood there and froze; I realized that I never knew what the characters in the book liked or what. I stood there as everybody stared at me as I slowly felt myself tearing up. When I finally couldn’t handle the embarrassment, I ran and hid myself behind two big shelves and didn’t come out until I heard my grandmother calling…

When I find a book I really enjoy and I get started I will lose track of time and sometimes end up finishing the book in one sitting. Even though I know this is horrible, if I don’t like a way a book is going sometimes I will skip to the end of a book to make sure it will end the way I like. If it doesn’t I will just stop reading and move on to a different book. My fiancé always thinks it’s funny because we’ll be sitting on the couch watching a show together and as soon as a commercial comes on I’ll pick up my Kindle and start reading my book, usually he has to pause the show because I’ll still be reading once it comes back on. He always says I have the Kindle glued to my side. I even have it sitting next time right now so I can continue reading my book once I finish writing this narrative. Even at work people know that when I’m on my break that if I have my Kindle in my hand they won’t even bother talking to me because I’m usually so engrossed in my book that I don’t usually even know what’s going on around me. I love reading books it’s one of my favorite past times, and I will always be thankful to my parents and my ninth grade teacher who helped my find my love for…

    How I Learned To Read

From Hardy Boys to Geronimo Stilton, I remember having every single book that came out from the series, and reading it from front to back. As time progressed and middle school hit, I usually just read the really long books such as the Unfortunate Series of Events and Harry Potter Series in order to finish all my points for the semester, but it made me go out of my comfort zone and actually dedicate my time and attention to the book. My love for reading faded away as I went into high school, with mainly time and technology being the main reasons for my decline in reading. As high school came along, getting time to read was hard due to my schedule during the school years. Although I hardly read independently, I still enjoy reading the news online and short stories I find on Twitter, which are way more convenient and quicker to read. I also try to keep up with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series during the summer and would like to finish the reading the Series of Unfortunate Events books, to find out what happens to Violet, Klaus, and Sunny after all these…

My experience with words goes way back. Much like Sherman Alexie, I was very young when first exposed to words, so young I can’t remember there being a time before books were a part of my life. I imagine my mother was was reading to me since my first day of life. She would read me story after story in the quiet hours before bedtime, stories about fantastic creatures and magical places. I never wanted the stories to end. Before I could fully understand words I had loved them.…

During these years, I started reading longer books and series books. I remember reading A child called IT by Dave Pelzer. This book brought many emotions to me. It was mainly about a boy who was brutally beaten and starved by his mother who was very tortuous. Many of the “games” this mother did to “it” almost left him dead. This book inspired me to look out for my future students. This child did not get help from any of his teachers. It really opened my eyes to reality and showed me that a situation like this is possible. Till this day, I keep recommending this book. It gave me strong emotions but t was a book that I was not able to put down. The way it was written gave me a full image in my head. Growing up I realized that I was more of a visual learned. Therefore, I enjoyed the book since it brought images into my head. A small book taught me a big lesson that I will forever be grateful to have…

At a very young age, I found my love for reading. I learned to read at age three, and I read to myself nightly ever since I went into preschool. My reading level progressed very quickly. I loved the feeling of being able to finish a challenging book on my own at that age. Going into preschool, I can remember being one of the only kids who could read, so clearly, I felt like I should show off my skills to the other preschoolers. After preschool, I was thrilled to go to kindergarten so everyone in my class would…

When I was a young girl my mother would read to me every night before I went to sleep. She would read all types of books from fairy tales to nursery rhymes, fiction and non-fiction, I loved them all. I wouldn't fall asleep until she would read the entire book, or at least I would try, but her voice was so soothing that I couldn't help it but to close my eyes and fall into a deep sleep. I would sometimes fine myself trying to read along with her but at that time I was only three and hadn't started school yet so I didn't know how to read. All I could dream of was going to school and learning how to read and write. It all started when I was a little girl at the age of five I had just started kindergarten at Walker Elementary School. When I first walked into the school I could smell the crayons and paint coming from each room leaking into the hall ways. My first day of school was very exciting I was the shortest girl in the class but I got along with everyone. My teachers name was Miss, Brown she was a tall dark skin lady with long black hair and an accent that I could barely understand but that never stopped me from listening to every word she said. I enjoyed school so much especially the reading time. Miss Brown would ring her golden bell which signaled that it was reading and comprehension time. Everyone would sit in a circle while Miss, Brown sat right in the middle she would grab a book from the many book selves that was stored in the back of the class. As Miss, Brown sat in the middle of the floor I could see she had one of my favorite book Green Eggs and Ham. Every week Miss, Brown would pick a student to help her read aloud to the class and this week it was my turn. Green Eggs and Ham was the first book my mother every read to me. I knew that book like the back of my hand I was so ready to take charge and read that book like a pro. As I sat in the circle with Miss, Brown and listen to her read the first few…

I read a lot when I was little, much of which was too old for me. There were Chekov and Shaw in the room where I had to take naps and I never slept but sat on the window sill reading, then scrubbed the soles of my feet so the nurse would not see I had been out of bed. My heroes were Byron, Mowgli, Robin Hood, Little Lord Fauntleroy’s grandfather, and Scarlett O’Hara.…
