Living On Base Is Better Than Living Off Base
We have experienced the military life for four years now. Within those four years we were always given the option to live on base or off. The answer has always been the same, off base. I enjoy living off base because we have more freedom, a sense of normalcy, more income, and a better way to experience the culture in Spain. Being able to live off base has always been a better experience for us and we always enjoy the different homes we are able to choose from.
First I enjoy living off base because we have more freedom. Being off base we still have to follow certain rules of the military but not the ones of the base. By living out in town we have begun to learn Spanish and only shop at local stores. We have chosen that if this is going to be our lives for the next three years than we would do it right. Being able to communicate with the locals here has opened up so many opportunities and has even given my three year old a great opportunity in school.
I have come to know many people that choose to only live on base. Especially here in
Spain, it almost seems like they are afraid of what is outside the gates. There are families that never choose to leave the base, stating that everything they need is right there. Some families also state that living outside of the base is too dangerous in today’s society because of all the re- cent terrorist attacks. While I do feel that this is a true statement, living on the base can also be considered a target for terrorists versus the surrounding city. Families should not be living in fear everyday and should instead be living for the enjoyment every day. There are so many things that this world has to offer and if people are choosing to live their everyday lives in only a
