In no more than 300 words, write a descriptive analysis of this painting. Pay particular attention to the positioning of the figure and to features such as lighting, colour and brush work, and say how you think these contribute to the effect of the work.
In this painting Girl in a Chemise, Pablo Picasso uses a variety of artistic techniques to portray the girl in the impressionism and mood she is set in .
The most noticeable aspect of this painting on first glance are the veils of dark brushwork the artist has used to contrast the background from the girl in the painting. The girl is the main focal point of the painting and is positioned in the centre of the piece . The background of the painting has horizontal vertical brush strokes while the girl herself has some vertical horizontal brush strokes across the chemise which adds to the contrasting of the two features, making her jump out from the vertical background.
Obvious from the painting are its lack of bright and varied colours. The artist uses a somewhat minimal range of colours and tone consisting mainly of dark blues, greys and browns , which I feel has been done to createcreates a cold and dark environment, setting a gloomy mood in which the girl is set.
There is no obvious source of light in the painting apart from the slight light shading of the girls’ right breast which adds to the dark setting of the painting. I believe theThe light shading around her breast is used to add a sexually attractive element to the figure.
The chemise itself accentuates the girl from the veiled background and is the lightest aspect of the painting. It draws attention to the girl herself who, from use of dark shading around her face, neck and upper chest, appears very pale and gaunt.
The overall image is a very thin, possibly ill girl, also trying to be somewhat desirable, set in a depressed imprisoned setting.
