So many people haven’t seen him in a long time. They may feel like they lost him a long time ago, and maybe felt a hurt and grief over his death that came as a surprise.
Uncle Ralph was always sweet, congenial, and easy to get along with. There was a warmth in him that made you feel good about yourself. It’s only natural that a part of us would have held out hope in connecting with him again and feeling that warmth.
I was lucky enough to spend time with him over the last several weeks, but in order to write this eulogy, I had to ask my family to fill in some holes for me. Of course, children listen but they don’t always understand. One day, Gram told the kids that Ralph had fallen down the stairs. Then-seven-year-old Aunt Jane wasn't worried, though. She said, “It's okay, he just hit his head!”
This wasn’t the last accident Uncle Ralph got himself into, but it didn’t seem to slow him down for long. He and his brother and sisters pretty much grew up outside, staying out from morning to night when not in school. They would do daring things like jump off the roof.
