Loyalty, courage and honor are all traits that define the greatness in a person, but to obtain all of these attributes is very difficult. To be loyal is to give unending support towards someone or something. When a person is courageous, he or she is brave in a way that is heroic. Honor is having high respect and admiration. In the novel The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff, protagonist Marcus Aquila shows flawless loyalty, courage and honour throughout the book. Marcus’ loyalty shines through him in many ways. One of them is how he is very loyal to Esca. Esca offered to sacrifice himself for the safety of Marcus and the Eagle, but Marcus said, “We are in this together, and we will win clear together, or not at all,” (pg.161). Marcus also shows great loyalty to his father and his father’s legion. Ever since his father and his legion vanished, he felt impelled to not only find out what happened, but also to find and return the Eagle.
Marcus is a very loyal person, but he is also an extremely honorable man. One example of this is the wolf Cub that Marcus and Esca raised since he was very small. Another honorable thing that Marcus did is he went to find and return the Eagle from the tribesmen. Even though he could have died, Marcus still begged for permission to go. One way he is courageous is when he offered to return to the land of the Seal People to retrieve the Eagle. This is courageous because he had an injured leg and he would have to walk very far. Another courageous act Marcus did is jump in front of Cradocs chariot. He knew that it would lead to certain injury or possibly death but he did it to defend the frontier fort. The most courageous thing Marcus did is when he stole the Eagle. It was a very dangerous, risky, and difficult act of courage.
