Throughout the poem, a couple that seems happy suddenly becomes distant which gives the woman a chance to gather her inner courage to let go of the dull relationship and become independent. MacNeice's use of repetition at the beginning and end of each stanza represents the boundaries that the two partners were stuck between as they continue to drift away from each other and repeat their boring, ongoing routines. When MacNeice says “Time was away and somewhere else,” she is stressing how unhappy the couple feels as time continues and their bond loosens by repeating the phrase in the first and last lines of the stanza (Line 1). Time was away and somewhere else” she is describing the way they were sitting at a table in a coffee shop facing each other, represented by the switch from “AB” to “BA” and their connection, “C” is bringing them closer (Line 1-5). Their connection is also represented by the pulse that the couple supposedly shares, showing that they became a huge part of each other's lives due to their close bond. The way MacNeice uses rhyme helps this stanza suggest that even the strongest and happiest relationships can grow apart and it takes a great amount
