It is about the struggles a young girl, named Tess, goes through when she finds out that her sister, Kristina, was diagnosed with cancer. Tess has always been looking up to her older sister, because her sister was always the center of the crowd, sporty, beautiful one and Tess was always the smart, un-popular one. It was always hard on Tess, so when her sister was diagnosed with cancer, she felt as if she could finally be known. All of Kristina’s friends started befriending Tess, now that her sister wasn’t at school. Although Tess loved the popularity, she did have a lot of trouble too. Not a lot of people were asking how Tess was doing about the whole cancer situation but there was one person who was always there for her. His name was Clark. After talking days upon days with him, Tess began to want to be more then friends with him. But Tess also knew that she had to be there for her sister and didn’t have time to have a serious love life at that point in time. Then Tess met a boy from school named Jeremy. Jeremy has a little crush on Kristina, but is also now good friends with Tess. Tess was wondering why he would always talk about Kristina, and then he finally informed her that he always hangs out with her at the hospital when he is visiting his mother, who also has cancer.…

In the poem “Hanging Fire” by Audre Lorde she displays identity and coming of age vividly through a fourteen year old. This teenager is rapidly searching for an identity within the consent and affection of others with an incredible fear of not making it. She is silently begging for the attention of her mother. No one is soothing the sensations that are consuming her, “what if I die before morning and momma’s in the bedroom with the door closed”. With no direction to kindle the motivation that is hardly there as it is, our character is waiting senselessly and fearfully to be knocked down by the wind of the physical and emotional insecurities she keeps close by.…

The message is that love is love. The author uses the plot to convey the message by having Idgie and Ruth both lose Buddy, who is Idgie's older brother and Ruth's lover. They both feel pain and remorse over Buddy's death but, in different ways, all at the same. Over time, Ruth and Idgie begin to love each other as sisters. The term, “Coming of Age” has a variety of connotations ranging from a realization of one’s personal duty in life to a more harrowing observation about the harsh reality one has been hidden from while in the depths of his/her youth. While perhaps there are as many different conclusions reached about growing up as there are pieces of literature revolving around the subject, two works in particular offer transitional tales that depict vastly different narratives. Judith Ortiz Cofer in her poem, Quinceanera, presents a dark and literal use of language to portray a raw and reluctant journey to womanhood, while in “My Back Pages” Bob Dylan more frequently utilizes figurative language to relay a sense that the anger and resentment of his youth was…

Death can be seen as a catalyst for the formation of personal identity. This is evident through the death of family, life, and religion. First, in A Complicated Kindness Nomi's personality is shaped when she deals with the death of her family structure. When her mother and sister disappear, “Sometimes I think Trudie blamed Ray for Tash leaving town with Ian because if Ray had agreed to leave first, had taken us all off to some other place, Tash wouldn’t have had anything to rebel against and would have stuck around”, (118, Toews). Nomi and her father, Ray, are abandoned by Trudie and Tash, Nomi’s mother and sister, because their religious community is suffocating. Through this abandonment, Nomi and Ray are left with only each other and learn to work together as a small family. With the loss of her female role models, Nomi is forced to mature and develops a unique, free-thinking attitude on life. Death of family is also seen in Anne of Green Gables when…
