LS4002 THE CHEMICAL FOUNDATIONS OF LIFE

Practical 1
Aim

To introduce students to the basic skills needed for the accurate chemical analysis.

Essential Requirements

All students should acquire appropriate eye protection (safety glasses) and a laboratory coat. Failure to do so will result in being refused entry to the laboratory.

The COSHH assessments should be read carefully and any hazards associated with the experiments should be noted and responded to as appropriate.

The experiment will take up to the full 2 hours timetabled. Hence it is important that you are punctual for the class especially as information is often given out orally at the start.
It is unlikely that any student turning up after the class has commenced will be admitted to the laboratory.

Normally students will work in pairs. If you are unable to find a partner the tutor will allocate you one or allow you to work on the experiment alone.

Assessment

The practical work accounts for 10% of the module mark.

Practical 1 will be assessed by an online submission of results and answers to questions through StudySpace. Students are encouraged to keep detailed notes of the results obtained from the experiment.

Deadlines

Each experiment has a two week period after the lab session during which time the results may be submitted.

LS4002 - EXPERIMENT 1

Quantitative Analysis by Acid-Base Titration - A Determination of the Quantity of Aspirin in Powdered Tablets

Aims

In this experiment a solution of sodium hydroxide will be standardised using potassium hydrogen pthalate. This standardised sodium hydroxide solution will then be used to titrate powdered aspirin tablets. The percentage of aspirin in the powder tablets will then be calculated.

Introduction

Acid-base titrations are an example of what is called volumetric analysis. As the

Small samples of acetaminophen, acetylsalicylic acid, cellulose, starch, and caffeine were obtained. These samples were then placed into seperate sets of test tubes that contained water, acetone, or dichloroethane. Solubilities were then tested for each sample in each solution which can be seen in Table 5. Next, four random pills were obtained and weights were taken of each. Each of the pills were grinded up using a separate mortar and pestle.…

The concentration of one solution was determined by its reaction with a standard solution. The molar mass of unknown acids were also calculated. While learning to titrate, I learned several other skills in the process. I learned how to prepare a standard solution of sodium hydroxide, how to standardize a sodium hydroxide solution by using potassium hydrogen phthalate (KHP), how to find the molar masses of unknown organic acids when given whether the acid is monoprotic, diprotic, or triprotic, and how to calculate the molarity of a soft drink. At the same time, other skills were practiced. Skills such as calculating molarity, molar mass and percent error were exercised.…
