Lucy Kanzi Case Study Human Communication
Lucy was raised by humans, through “human” methods. Her adoptive human parents raised her as if she was their human daughter. After living with them, Lucy showed multiple signs of basic human abilities. One of them being, communication. Lucy was then taught sign language to communicate with her human parents and Janis. Lucy communicated with them and conversed with them. Even after her human parents was no longer capable of caring for her, Lucy remained “human.” She was taken to an island and was taken cared of by Janis. Even after showing that Lucy was able to communicate I am still not convinced that Lucy was exchanging conversations with these humans. One evidence of this comes from the island when Janis and Lucy would fight. Janis would …show more content…

Compared to Lucy, Kanzi was raised not to be human but to be able to communicate with humans and to create a bond between one another. Initially, I believed that Kanzi was reacting to conditioned stimulus because of the way he learned the words but after listening to the conversations he had with Bill, I was convinced that he was communicating with him and conversing with him in English. One major problem is, interpreting what Kanzi was saying. Primates are not capable of speaking like humans because they lack the same vocal cord movements that humans have. There were multiple examples of those the two having a conversation and almost all of them convinced me that they were, in fact, interacting and having a conversation. There was a moment when Kanzi spoke with Bill, telling him to bite the investigator because he/she was yelling at Sue regarding a problem about their format. Kanzi said that if Bill did not bite her, Kanzi would bite him. Bill being human refused to bite the investigator and Kanzi bit him. This is a great example that Kanzi was speaking English because Kanzi warned bill but he did not listen, which resulted in Bill getting multiple surgeries for his severed finger. For 8 months Bill and Kanzi did not communicate but after a long while, Kanzi apologized to Bill. His apology was genuine. He actually uttered the word sorry to

Communication is essential in both humans and other animals. It can take different forms, from birds using a song to attract mates, to humans using symbols to convey meaning, and from cats and dogs using certain postures to signal aggression to humans using gestures to convey a message (Cooper T. and Kaye H., 2007).…

A male Bonobo ape named Kanzi has made one of the most important advancements in linguistic capabilities amongst primates. The result of accidental exposure to English language has proved his greatest success. Learning from just a few months after birth, Kanzi had started to learn more effectively than any other primate, the structure of language. Kanzi’s researchers took a slightly different approach to the field. They devised a geometrically patterned “keyboard” where each geometric shape labeled, signified a different word. On top of this, they tried a different approach to teaching; they practiced a much more language immersive setting and tried to make life fun for him, instead of repeated rigorous…

“Fundamental and vital to all health care managerial functions, communication is a means of transmitting information and making oneself understood by others” (Borkowski, 2015, P. 79). It is clear that communication is a major issue in this case. Performance of an employee depends on his or her ability to effectively interact with the superiors, co-workers within the organization. Interpersonal skill is therefore an important aspect of communication. It can be defined as the “process whereby the individual implements a set of goal-directed, inter-related situationally appropriate social behavior which are learned and controlled” (Berry, 2006, p. 13). There was a very poor impersonal communication between Lawanda and her co-worker in the ICU.…

Another example, that proved animals have the capacity to communicate was Kanzi, a male chimpanzee, whose mother had been trained to communicate by pushing geometric symbols into a keyboard, but Kanzi had received no special training himself. However, he was present at his mother's training sessions, and at the age of two and a half, he stunned his trainers when he began manipulating symbols on the keyboard to ask for a fruit. Kanzi was able to put the symbols in the appropiate order to reflect changes in actions.…

So an important thing to distinguish when examining ability of non-human primates with communication or language is the actual defined difference between language and communication, and exactly where the definite line of distinction might be separating the two, if there even is a line to be considered when looking at so many different animals. Non-human primates have been studied and observed for both communication and language capabilities and distinction is often necessary to understand what has been discovered and what can be discovered. Many researchers of non-human primates argue that they cannot and do not have the capability of language, while others believe that non-human primates do have language, or can be taught forms of language by humans. Some researchers, that believe that non-human primates do have language or can be taught language, realize that it may not be the same level of complexity as that of human language as a whole but that it is a simple but true language form nonetheless. The reality is the definition of language and communication are what truly can determine if research can show non-human primates having language and or the ability of learning human language when trained, so each research can have potentially a different…

Almost all animals communicate. As author, David Abram, mentions in his text, The Spell of the Sensuous, animals “…communicate with each other, often employing a repertoire of gestures, from “marking” territory with chemical secretions, to the facial expressions of many mammal species, to the hosts of rattles, cries, howls, and growls…” (78). Unlike most animals, the preferred means of communication is language. Language is more than simply a method of communicating information, it holds much more power, and that power is dependent entirely on how we employ it.…

In addition to Terrace's monkeys demonstrating the ability to remember and apply lists in order to solve problems without the involvement of language(Terrace, 2011), however, some other primates have been able to demonstrate their own problem-solving skills using language. Koko the gorilla has been able to combine a long list of words in order to form different word meanings without prompt, finding ways to refer to herself (Progress & Plans, web), and also ways of expressing 'ring', 'melon', 'swan', and 'gorilla' using the signs she already knew , using language freely(StateMaster - Encyclopedia, web). This shows an understanding about the meaning of the signs she used to build new ones, and that she registered a need for such words in the first place (rudimentary schemas?). This ability to combine words for different meanings would qualify Koko's signing as human language, by the grammars method of Noam Chomsky(Terrace,…

(2) In the 1950s, psychologists failed to teach a chimpanzee to speak, for the ape was able to grunt only a few words. (5) As it turns out, the great apes have the capacity to learn language, but they cannot speak.
