Luke 17: 11-19
Scriptures and particular parts of text in the Bible are facile to probe when tools of modern biblical scholarship are utilized. Luke 17:11-19 is an excellent piece of scripture to practice using biblical scholarship tools such as, reading the scripture in different translations and variants, looking at the passages before and after the selected passage, classifying the passages according to type or form, looking at textual variations, looking at references and parallel passages elsewhere in the Bible, describing the structure of the passages, identifying connect subjects, identifying verbs, identifying the characters, studying the vocabulary, noting the figures of speech and studying them, study questions the passage may raise, and by the

The book of Luke is considered, or named, one of the gospels. The other gospels of the Bible surround gospel of Luke as the books Matthew and mark are before Luke and the book of John is after Luke, and are all gospels also. A gospel is “an account that describes the life of Jesus of Nazareth” (Landau, Brent). There is a significance of the scripture being studied, Luke 17:11-19, being placed where it is along with books that are gospels. The location of the passages of study is informative that the passage is about or was during the time of Jesus’s life, giving the reader a sense of time, location, and significance of the passage. There are very few books that tell of Jesus’s life story, making this set of scriptures more precious as they are limited in comparison to the amount of scripture without the enclosing of Jesus’s lifetime and living actions. Luke 17:11-19 is also located in a sequence of parables. Luke 17 is preceded by four chapters that are made up solidly of parables. The book of Luke is known for its parables as they are referred to as life lessons for teaching throughout the Christian world. The set of verses 17:11-19 are assumed to be a parable themselves too as its placement and similar context to those previous to it allow for the assumption to be correct (Leitch, Cliff).
