Lupus is an auto immune inflammatory disease that attacks the body’s tissues and organs and it occurs mostly among females. The inflammation attacks different parts of the body (internal and external) for example the skin, brain and joints (Mayo Clinic.2017). Lupus is also known as “The Great Imitator” since the symptoms that come with Lupus mimic those of other diseases (LupusSA.2017)
The aim of this research is to find out how Lupus alters a person’s lifestyle. The main changes that occur (as is in most diseases) are the diet, exercise and finances.

This is why it is very difficult to diagnose. Lupus is a caused by a person’s genetic makeup and environmental factors. These factors include certain medication or drugs, infections and sunlight. A person with an inherited lupus gene can develop Lupus when they come in contact with the environmental factors (for example, sunlight) and this then activates the gene. According to Lupus SA, children who are born into families that have a history of Lupus have a 5% higher chance of developing the disease (LupusSA.2017). The types of Lupus are not exactly alike. This is because the signs and symptoms may develop slowly whether mild or severe and some symptoms even disappear completely for a short period of time. One test cannot determine whether a person has Lupus. A series of tests must be taken in order to determine whether a person has Lupus. These tests include blood and urine tests. These must be accompanied by the types of symptoms the person has and a physical examination. This will then help determine whether a person has Lupus. If there is decrease in red blood cells and haemoglobin in the blood, then it is possible that a person might develop Lupus.
