Leadership styles

1. Identify factors that will influence your choice of leadership styles or behaviours in your workplace.

The factors which influence my leadership styles and behaviours are:

• Workload and Time Pressure
• The feelings and body language of Individuals/Team
• Requests/Requirements of my Manager
• Customer Needs and Attitudes
• Personal Situations – either my own or that of my colleagues

Ultimately these factors would result in my behaviour being that of an affiliative and democratic style of leadership. It is also possible that a coaching style my also become apparent, where the factor is that of a personal situation.

2. Explain why these leadership styles or behaviours are likely to have a positive effect on individuals and team.

When the situation or atmosphere with my colleagues has been that of a negative nature I have adopted an affiliative style, thus creating harmony within the team and ensuring better communications and ultimately building new and improving on existing relationships. This has been most effective when a team member is dealing with either a personal issue or workload and time pressure.

Adopting a democratic style has given individuals an opportunity to bring new ideas to the table and air any concerns thy may have. All individuals felt they had contributed and participated in reaching the objective. This has been particularly effective when dealing with requests and requirements of the General Manager/Director and dealing with customer needs and attitudes.

Where the situation has been positive then I have adopted a coaching style to offer vision, inspiration and knowledge. As this style is very much a one to one situation, I have found that the use of this style to be most effective when someone is dealing with a personal issue. Guiding them through a difficult situation using my experience and knowledge to bring them to a more positive and manageable situation.

Laissez-faire style can be frustrating; group apathy and disinterest can occur. However , when all group members are highly motivated and self-directed, this leadership style can result in much creativity and productivity.…
