Machiavelliansim
What you don’t know about people effects you and me everyday.

In the 16th century, immediately following the publication of The Prince, Machiavellianism was seen as a foreign plague infecting northern European politics, originating in Italy, and having first infected France.

Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli was an Italian historian, politician, diplomat, philosopher, humanist and writer based in Florence during the Renaissance. His moral and ethical beliefs led to the creation of the word Machiavellianism which has since been used to describe one of the three dark triad personalities in psychology.

As a child, I had a thing for the newest sneakers. Jordan’s were my favorite of all sneakers. My dad took me to the store one day and if there is one thing I know is that you have to go to the store on the first day the shoes come out in stores because they sell out fast.
My dad said son try on these sneakers, do they fit. I said dad yes they do I want them.
He said I can buy you these Jordan’s all day everyday, but let’s see how fast you are in them. Run down this aisle and I will time you. I ran and he clocked me in at five seconds. You should have seen my face, I was proud of my self.
Dad then said lets go to another store (payless) and try on some other sneakers. These are the batman sneakers and they light up every time you walk. Let’s test them out run down the aisle and I will time you. He clocked me in at 3 seconds. Then he said son I can buy you the Jordan’s all day everyday, but for the price of the Jordan’s you can get the batman’s, the robins, the Pokémon, and the digamons and you’ll run faster. I said dad I will take all the sneakers you just said.
My dad as you can see was a master of Machiavellianism. He effectively convinced me to get the cheaper sneakers which total price was still less than one pair of Jordan’s. Did I really run faster, or was the aisle shorter. I will never know.

Machiavelli was a Florentine man of many skills. He was a renowned politician, author, and philosopher during the Renaissance, whose views and opinions affect the way people still think today. The Prince is his most famous work and in it he essentially states that humans are “ungrateful, fickle, deceptive and deceiving”. For that reason, a leader should rule through fear rather than love. However, what Europeans needed during the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries were compassionate rulers. They were already frightened and disunited during the middle ages, thus adding a fearful leader to the mix would not help citizens feel safer.…

People who wanted fame and power in this new world of humanism and self-righteousness had to deserve it. No longer did a supreme authority, such as the pope, appoint officials and leaders. The authority rested in the hands of the person willing to take charge. This approach to gaining wealth and power can be described as Machivellian, named so by the influence of ideologist Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli wrote one of the most influential political books of all time, called the Prince, which is considered the most lasting work on Italian Renaissance. In his novel, Machiavelli writes of " cruelty, well used or badly used," and warns the compassionate and humanistic prince "not to make bad use of this compassion".(Burke p.196) Machiavelli expanded on his belief in the Prince, that Italians should behave with ferocity when it comes to politics, and should back up that ferocity with a unified force. Machiavelli's principles have had a profound effect on the way Europe and the rest of the world have viewed politics over centuries, and truly show the Rennaissance's uncanny trait of promoting individualism and social Darwinism.

The Italian Renaissance has made a major impact on the rest of Europe, leaving an intellectual and artistic heritage that…

It is clear that right off the bat the purpose of this advertisement is to display that in order to become a great basketball player you must own a pair of Jordan’s. Teens seem to be most drawn into this commercial because a typical adolescent involves themselves in extracurricular and rec sports outside of school. Adolescents grasping onto this certain commercial believe that without a pair of Jordan’s they cannot fully appreciate the sport of basketball. Kids will feel the urge to go out of their way and purchase Jordan’s to feel socially acceptable or up to standards with what societies standards of what fashionable and sporty is. Kids who may not be financially stable enough to buy these shoes will have to come to terms with the fact that their shoe brand that they are wearing is not up to par thus not socially acceptable. The work ethic and intense amount of dedication is overshadowed in the commercial, and traps the idea in adolescent’s minds that by purchasing a pair of Jordan’s is the first and last step to winning on the court and in…

What can I help you with tonight?", asked the rotund man named Carl. His voice was nasally, and from my dad's facial expression I could tell he thought the same thing. His face was scrunched up like he had smelled something bad; he turned to me and said, "Does it look like I need any help?" I was not dumb enough to say anything to that, and apparently, neither was Carl. He slowly backed away from us until he got to the cash register, where an angry black woman started to wave a shoe in his face, saying,"These are NOT the shoes I ordered! I want a discount!" So, they aren't the shoes you ordered and you want them anyway? I literally have no words, and I always have a snarky comment stored away. Anyway, my dad looked like he was about to go on a warpath, so I decided to sit down. Meanwhile, my father decided to look at some shoes, and I started to make faces at the little Indian boy who was sitting beside me. For a moment, it seemed as if my dad had calmed down because he was carefully pursuing the shoe collection with a thoughtful, peaceful expression. Until the angry black woman accidently spilled her coffee on his…

There is only one reason that human history is filled with violence and controversy. This is because people were inherently evil. Machiavelli’s view of humanity is of a society full of selfish individuals who would choose success for themselves over the success of someone they love. His society however, was much different from the society we live in today. In his era, most regions were rule by single individuals or family lines which used cruelty and fear to keep their people in line. In our current era the use of democratic forms of government have become a symbol of political evolution and progress for human rights. Democratic systems of government did not rise in popularity until after Machavelli’s time, and so this is why he denied their…
