21 October 2014 This cartoon is called Mad Tom in a Rage from 1802 by Anonymous. Jefferson is shown drunk, and the devil behind him to pull down the government. Jefferson made the Embargo Act, where the congress passed it, the Embargo Act did not allow any trade to come in and out of the U.S. Jefferson expected it to not be a law for long since he believed that the British and French would desperately ask for their trade. But it turns out that both Great Britain and France resisted the temptation. It was an embarrassment to Jefferson and it brought down America's finances. Their is dialogue from the devil in which he says, "Pull Away Pull Away my Tom. I'll give you all my assistance." . And which Jefferson says, "Oh! I fear
it is stronger rooted than I expected but with the assistance of my Old Friend and a little more Brandy I will bring it down.”. Satan is implying that he will help to bring down the government while Jefferson, referring to the devil as an old friend, says that with his drunken self and the devil will bring the government down together. It is because of Jefferson's mistake that America was going through a tough time. Even though that the artist is unknown, it would be expected to know that he or she was an American who was frustrated with all that Jefferson did.
