MADD
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a nonprofit organization in the United States that seeks to stop drunk driving, support those affected by drunk driving, prevent underage drinking, and overall push for stricter alcohol policy.
The Irving, Texas–based organization was founded in 1980 in California by Candice Lightner after her 13-year-old daughter Cari was killed by a drunk driver. On May 3, 1980 Lightner’s 13-year-old daughter, Cari, was killed by a drunken hit-and-run driver at Sunset and New York Avenues in Fair Oaks, California. The 46-year-old driver, who had recently been arrested for another DUI hit-and-run, left her body at the scene.
MADD's original goal was an enormously important one -- to reduce drunk driving and the deaths and injuries that it causes. However, from what I can see and as its founder observed, the group has become neo-prohibitionist. As a former MADD chapter president (Candice Lightner) explains, it's "a big corporation" and "all about money." Unfortunately, it appears that what began as a dedicated volunteer group of caring women has become a largely indifferent self-serving bureaucracy.
The biggest problem in reducing drunk driving fatalities now consists of the hard core of alcoholic drivers who repeatedly drive with BAC's of .15 or higher. But MADD has now decided to go after social drinkers and to eliminate driving after drinking any amount of alcohol beverage. In my opinion Mothers against Drunk Driving stigmatizes light or moderate alcohol consumption, even when it isn't associated with either being underage or driving. This change appears to reflect the influence of a growing neo-prohibitionist movement within MADD.
The founding president of MADD, Candy Lightner, left in disgust from the organization that she herself created because of its change in goals. "It has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I ever wanted or envisioned," she says. "I

Lightner started MADD only four days after Cari’s death and with little money, she quit her job and used her savings to fund the organization (“Candy Lightner”). This whole idea of MADD started years ago when Candy Lightner’s daughter Cari, was walking with her friend and was struck and killed by a man who left the scene of the accident, and was drunk driving. After she was told that he actually was only out of jail for two days after being arrested for another hit- and- run drunk- driving crash. His record had reflected three other arrests-two resulted in convictions and one was reduced to a reckless driving offense. It was soon after this that Candy Lightner and a few friends started MADD to fight against drunk drivers. The first chapter that was started in Maryland was by another woman named Cindi Lamb who was trying to fight the fact that her five month old daughter became paralyzed by a repeat drunk driver offender as well. The two women were brought together by a press secretary to congress and had a news conference that brought a lot of attention to this impaired-driving problem that is everywhere. Soon all over the nation Candy Lightner was contacted to comment on high profile cases. This lobbying group was incorporated in 1980 as a California corporation.” By June of 1981 it had achieved IRS tax-free status: later in the year, it received$100,000 in private funds.” Articles on the organization appeared in many magazines and newspapers…

From the same article Top 25 Causes of Car Accidents, Pines also tells, “Drunk driving is when you drink, you lose the ability to focus and function properly and driving under influence of alcohol causes car accidents everyday even when they are the top causes that can be avoided.” It’s a genuine statement since around the world, accidents related to drunk driving happens every day, but mostly, because of teen drunk drivers. Pines’ faithful sayings even state, “There are many ways that you can prevent drunken driving accidents. For instance, something as simple as a designated driver saves people from car accidents. By putting a sober person behind the wheel, everyone can feel free to have a good time at the bar without putting anyone’s life at risk on the road.” According to this state, I believe we can stop drunk driving since it is a situation all over the world. We can solve this solution as Pines’ declares, “by putting a sober person behind the wheel”. Major amount of teens and somewhat adults really need to stop since being so careless by drinking and driving doesn’t really help you that…

On May 3, 1980 Candy Lightner lost her 13 year old daughter, Cari Lightner, when a drunk driver stuck Cari and killed her tragically. Clarence Bush was the man behind the wheel and Candy Lightner had come to learn that he had a grocery list of arrests for intoxication. Unfortunately, the police officer working on the Cari Lightner case informed Candy that drunk drivers were not prosecuted harshly and Clarenece Busch would unlikely be thrown in jail for his heinous crime (he was eventually founded guilty of vehicular homicide and spent 21 months in jail). With her grief, anger and need for justice, Candy founded MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving).…

Cassandra Dorius from the University of Michigan and John McCarthy from Pennsylvania State University conducted a research as to why some activist leader work harder than others. They began a survey concerning anti-drunk driving activist leaders of MADD and RID who existed since 1985. In 1986, a self-administered survey was carried out, asking questions about each organization, its members, activities, community involvement, and the leaders themselves. Of the 458 groups that received the survey, 370 responded and completed it, “comprising a 78% response rate. At the time of the survey 79% of the leaders were women with average tenure as president of a little less than two years” (Dorius and McCarthy p.…

Looking at the history of Lightner, one might say that luck was not on her side especially where her children were concerned due to the numerous misfortunes they were experiencing. As if that was not enough, Lighter’s 13 year old daughter, Cari, was one day in 1980 walking in her neighborhood in Fair Oaks on her way to church for a carnival (Lerner, 2011). She was suddenly hit from behind by a drunken driver who had apparently momentarily passed out then woke up and drove off after having murdered Cari (Levinson, 2002). Her body had been thrown a number of feet and was so badly damaged that not even her organs could be given up for donation. On conducting an investigation on the driver, it was revealed that the offender was a repeat DWI who had been released on bail for a hit…
