According to vocabulary.com, an activist is defined as a person who campaigns for some kind of social change. Changing the world to be a better place to live on is always the mission for most people. From fighting for female education to fighting to prevent animal abuse, Malala and Kesha have been very outspoken about issues that have to change. Even though they both fight for different issues, both women are recognized and awarded for what they are doing. The issues that they are fighting for are one of the biggest issues that are talked about on the news and also on social media. Malala Yousafazai and Kesha are activists for the issues around the world but, what they are fighting for are different. Malala Yousafazai was born on July 12, 1997 in Mingora, Pakistan, which is located in Swat Valley (biography.com). Malala was raised in a place that females were banned from getting an education. The beginning of her fighting for female education began when she attended a school that was founded by her father. The girls from the school were attacked by the Taliban which led to Malala making a speech called “How dare the Taliban take away my basic right to education” (biography.com. Due to her fighting for female education, a gunman shot Malala while coming home from school on October 9, 2012. Even though the
Taliban attacked her, she still remains a strong advocate for the power of education. On her birthday in 2015, Malala opened a school for Syrian refugees. It offers education for girls aged 14 to 18 years (mic.com). Malala has traveled to Nigeria to highlight Boko Haram’s abduction of dozens of young girls. She has even celebrated her 17th birthday with some of the girls who had escaped Boko Haram (mic.com). Kesha Rose Sebert is a singer/song writer that was born on March 1, 1987 in Los Angeles, California (biography.com). Kesha’s goal is to promote respect, protection, and compassion for animals with the help of the Human Society. According to the Humane Society, Kesha has become the first global ambassador of the Humane Society International (HSI). The recent cause that Kesha has done was to promote “Be Cruelty-Free” which means that to use cosmetic products that are not tested on animals. To spread her love of animals, Kesha has taken social media to tell and inform her fans and other people to help stop animal abuse and testing on animals. Kesha has stated “My music is inspired by the freedom and primal beauty of animals and the natural world (HSI). Kesha and her mother, Pebe Sebert, have been very outspoken on social media by posting petitions about different animal abuse that are happening around the world. Kesha was awarded the Wyler Award at the humane Society of the United States Genesis Award event in 2013 (hsi.org). Malala and Kesha are both activist and they focus on one of the most talked about issues that is happening around the world.
Malala is an activist for female education and Kesha is an activist for animal rights. Both women have been rewarded for what they have done for the issues. Malala has won a Nobel Peace Prize and Kesha has been rewarded the Wyler Award from the Humane Society of the United States. Malala fight for female education when the Taliban attacked the girls at her school for having an education. Kesha started fighting for animal rights because her family have saved dogs from the streets and her mother taught to treat animals with
kindness.
