In I am Malala, Malala Yousafzai tells her story from her past to the present. She includes what happened in her home valley and the Taliban, a political group that are trying to get rid of all “Non-Islamic” people and their actions. There are five parts in the book. Part one is called, “Before the Taliban”. Malala talks about her life before the Taliban invaded her home valley of Swat. Part two is called, “The Valley of Death”. In this part, the Taliban come into her valley and she talks about what they cause. Soon her family leaves the valley because it is no longer safe. Part three is called, “Three Girls, Three Bullets”. It was brave of her father to speak out against the Taliban. Even after all the threats, he still did what he thought was right. It was brave of Malala to follow in her father’s footsteps, even with all of the danger that came with it. She spoke out on the behalf of letting girls go to school. She spoke on the radio and said, “How dare the Taliban take away my basic right to education?”. After she was shot, her father could have left her mother and brothers by themselves and go to Birmingham for his daughter. He had to make the right decision and not go with Malala. It took guts because he knew that his only daughter would wake up confused and alone without her family. But, his wife and sons needed him to stay and protect them because he did not know if the rest of his family was going to get attacked by the Taliban. Another example of the bravery that Malala had was after she was shot. She was in New York to speak at the United Nations. The UN is an intergovernmental organization. This was a big deal for Malala and she was only sixteen. One of most powerful lines in her speech was, “Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.” This is an example of bravery because she was just a sixteen-year-old girl who spoke in front of 400 grown adults.
