Determination, Self-sacrifice and Family
William Shakespeare believed “Life every man holds dear; but the dear man holds honor far more precious dear than life.” We as humans have an instinctive behavior of putting our lives first but a true honorable man put his honor before hand. In “Man of Honor” Carl Brashere always put his honor before his self-being. My brother Harvey also exemplified a great deal of honor through self-sacrifice. Carl Breashere and Harvey both have showed determination and heroism, but they withhold different ideals on the importance of family values. You cannot be seen as honorable without having determination. Carl Breashere was the only African American male amongst his peers in the Bayonne, New Jersey diving school. He Faced a severe amount of racism by his colleagues, leaving numerous messages stating “Were gonna drown you nigger” and “We don’t want no nigger divers”. Although these comments could of caused him to leave the diving school, it made him even more eager to become a navy diver. Also my brother Harvey somehow was always faced with intricate situations. …show more content…
Knowing that he would have a child on the way at a young age he was determined that his soon to come child would be financially secure. Working two jobs and saving every dime, he was able to provide a roof over his head for his new family. Both Harvey and Carl Breashere worked extremely hard for their goals, which resulted to an outcome in their favor. In addition to determination, sacrificing yourself in order to protect someone else also shows true honor.
After Carl had discovered a missing bomb for the air force he noticed a line used for towing was loose so he immediately tried to push his colleagues out the way. In return the line struck him in his left leg below the knee, nearly shearing it off. In addition at the age of seven, my brother and I were walking home as we encountered an over grown, vicious pit-bull dog who tried chasing after us. My brother immediately threw me over the nearest tall gate in order to secure my protection. I was in complete awe that my brother could react so quickly when it came to my safety. Both Harvey and Carl put their own lives at risk in order to help keep others out of
danger. Finally, putting your family before yourself shows honor. Carl literally gave his all to becoming a master diver. He gave up opportunities in Brooklyn because he knew it would put a barrier around his career, in return he was unable to provide for his family by continuing to be jobless. My brother on the other hand did everything in his will to help provide for my mother and I. My brother created his own business online selling clothes and other products to ensure that his family was financially stable. He would not stop innless all my mother’s bills were played. The difference between Harvey and Carl is that my brother put his family before his own self-fulfillment goal. Carl was selfish and only thought of what he needed to achieve in order to create the illusion of happiness. In conclusion, both Harvey and Carl are honorable but share different ideas on family. Both have a great deal of determination and have sacrificed themselves to ensure the safety of others but have different perspectives on family. Carl Breashere saved one of his colleagues and didn’t allow racial inequality to hold him back. My brother Harvey saved me from dangerous encounters and always worked hard to provide for my mother and his own family. Both men followed their own unique destiny-achieving honor in that process.
