Manganese Lab Report
Tris(acetylacetonato)manganese
Dissolve 0.26 g manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate and 0.68 g of sodium acetate in 10 mL of distilled water. Add 1 g acetylacetone and swirl the mixture. With magnetic stirring, add dropwise a solution of 0.052 g potassium permanganate in 2.5 mL of distilled water over a period of 10-15 minutes. Stir for 10 minutes, then add dropwise a solution of 0.63 g sodium acetate in 2.5 mL distilled water. Heat the resulting mixture on a hot plate to between 60 and 70oC for 15 minutes, with stirring, then cool to room temperature. Isolate the product by suction filtration and wash it with 6.0 mL of cold distilled water. Suction dry for 15 minutes, then dry in air. Determine % yield.
Recrystallize about 0.2 g of the crude

Place a small glass funnel in the mouth of the flask to serve as a reflux condenser, and boil on a steam bath for 5 minutes. Carefully decant the solution into a 100 mL Erlenmeyer, leaving any solid residue behind, and add 5 mL of methanol. Reheat to dissolve, then cool to room temperature. Isolate the product by suction filtration. Wash with a little ice-cold methanol, and suction dry, then air dry.

Diaquobis(acetylacetonato)cobalt
To a solution of 80 mg NaOH in 1 mL H2O, slowly add 200 mg (2 mmole) acetylacetone, with swirling. Any white solid formed at this point must be dissolved before continuing. This yellow solution is added dropwise, with stirring, to a solution of 238 mg (1 mmole) CoCl2.6H2O in 1.5 mL of water. Isolate the product by suction filtration and wash with water until the washings are nearly colorless (2-5 mL). Suck dry for 10 minutes, then air dry for a further hour. Weigh the product and calculate %yield.
Dissolve the crude product in a hot mixture of 2 mL ethanol and 1.3 mL chloroform (do not boil the resulting solution). Gravity filter through a Kimwipe plug in a Pasteur pipet. Cool the filtrate slowly to room temperature, then cool further in an ice bath. Isolate the product by suction filtration, wash with cold ethanol/H2O (20/1 v/v), and suck

It is necessary to recrystallize it in order to obtain pure Zn(C5H7O2)2.H2O. To do this, prepare a solution of acetone and distilled water that contains 35 mL of acetone plus 15 mL of water and add 1 mL of acetylacetone to it. The acetylacetone serves to prevent decomposition of the product. Finally, add the precipitate to the solution and stir thoroughly. What is the appearance of the solution? Fit a long- or short-stem funnel with a piece of fine filter paper for a gravity filtration and filter the mixture. The filtrate, which should be clear but not necessarily colorless, is collected in a beaker. Cover the beaker with a watch glass or a loosely fitting piece of aluminum foil and store it as directed by your instructor until the next period. It is desirable that partial evaporation of the solvent occur during the

The solution then gets foggy/cloudy and white snowlike precipitate is floating within the solution. Heat is added along with a stir bar. The stir bar starts stirring at minute 7. It begins to dissolve the white powder as it spins. At minute 26 the solution becomes clear with barely any flakes left. Sulfuric acid is then added and white flakes are formed. More acid is added until the pH paper turns red. The round bottom is filled with white precipitate. The precipitate is put onto a hirsh funnel that uses vacuum filtration to isolate the precipitate. The product is then added to a beaker with D.I water and heated. It’s put through the hirsh funnel . 3.68 grams of salicylic acid is recovered. The melting point is tested to compare to a perfect sample. The melting point is 146C0. The product is dried and added to a beaker with D.I. water and 10mL of acetic anhydride and 20 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid. This product is chilled to produce crystals. Its then filtered using a hirsh filter using vacuum filtration. Recrystallized and filtered one last time. The product is now acetylsalicylic acid…

Dissolve the solid in exactly 4 mL tert-butyl methyl ether of. Add exactly 2 mL of water, cap the tube and shake. Let the mixture stand until two layers are formed. Remove the aqueous layer. Wash the organic layer two more times with exactly 2 mL of water (each time). After the final wash, dry the organic layer with calcium chloride pellets. Remove the ether with a pipette and filter through a funnel plugged with cotton into a pre-weighed 50 mL beaker including a boiling chip. Wash the pellets with a full pipette of ether. Remove the ether with a pipette and filter through the funnel plugged with cotton into the 50 mL beaker. Evaporate off the ether in the hood on a hot plate under low heat. Add 8.0 mL of dichloromethane to the 0.40 g of Panacretin and shake thoroughly, then place in a centrifuge, at three (3) speed for three (3) minutes. Extract the Sucrose and weigh using a digital scale (must be tared for accuracy). Separate the 8.0 mL of DCM to two (2) test tubes, each containing 4.0 mL of DCM. Add 4.0 mL of NaHCO3 (Sodium bicarbonate) to each of the two (2) test tubes and stir using a stirring rod until two (2) layers are visible, a thin top layer and thick-filmy bottom layer. Extract the bottom layers from the two (2) test tubes to a vial using a glass micropipette and a rubber suction cap/top and seal immediately. Conjoin the two (2) top layers to a 50 mL flask and add 1.0 mL of 6.0 M HCl to the beaker containing the solution and stir until the fizzing subsides. Test the pH of the solution with 6.0 M HCl added using pH paper, which has a color chart to analyze the results. Continue to add 1.0 mL of 6.0 M HCl until the pH of the solution is two (2) or less. Place the solution with the pH of 2 or less into an ice bath/cold water bath to form crystallization of aspirin for approximately five (5) minutes. After the five (5) minutes, establish a funnel system using a Hirsche Funnel attached to a vacuum filtration system located on/in the hood, to extract the Aspirin crystals formed from the ice bath/cold water bath. Weigh the crystals of aspirin using a digital…

After complete addition of the sodium hydroxide, the mixture was left to stir for a further 30 minutes after which we reduced the stirrer speed to a gentle spin and water (2ml) was added and then stirred for a few more minutes. The content was transferred to a separatory funnel (30ml), using water (5ml) and dichloromethane (5ml) to complete the transfer. The mixture was shaken and left to settle, the organic layer was removed to an Erlenmeyer flask and the aqueous layer was extracted once more with dichloromethane (5ml) and then combined with the previous organic extract. The combined organic layers were dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, transferred through a Hirsch funnel into a filter flask (25m) attached to an aspirator. Filter paper was used to stop the drying agent from passing through the funnel, and the Erlenmeyer was rinsed with dichloromethane (1ml) and was poured over the drying agent in Hirsch funnel. After all the solvent went in the filter flask the aspirator was turned off, and the filter paper with…
