At first glance, the cantaloupe looks round and light grayish-tan, with a hint of green. From afar it looks round and plain, about the size of a peewee soccer ball. On approach, the circular shape is less perfect with subtle dents and bumps all around. Surrounding the sphere shaped fruit are light tan lines like a dense city map with all the streets intertwining and curving around without any significant pattern, not geometric like gridlines. On the surface, there are small matchbook sized patches color the skin, some more yellow and other patches that are darker green. A particular indention looks like the fruit might have laid on a rock on the ground while it was growing. One end, where the flower might have once been, is the palest of yellow circles. On the opposite edge, the stubby vestige of a stem remains. This dried up nub is the brown and shriveled, slightly indented from the rest of the globe. Surrounding the stem is a dark circle of hunter green.…

position with the Division of Economic Security (DES)?’ this is my response. Over the years I have held several different office type jobs. I started out as a temporary worker for DES, in a file room in the Child Support Division. I was required to build files for different units; maintain a log of the files that were being received, transferred out, and sent to the warehouse. The files sent to the warehouse were given a secondary number by the warehouse, in case a file had to be retrieved; this was the tracking system that allowed the warehouse to locate the appropriate file. I worked in DES as a Customer Service Representative (CSR) for the Family Assistance Administration (FAA). As a CSR I was required to perform a wide range of clerical duties; distributing mail/inter-office mail and faxes, pulling and filing files in the file room, registering/scheduling incoming applications, ensuring the case managers had their list of appointments for the day and the incoming paperwork that accompanied it, answering the switchboard to guide/answer incoming calls from consumers, and scan information the case managers had gathered from the consumers into the system. The position as a CSR proved tested my ability to multi-task and to prioritize and re-prioritize with the day to day changes.…

When it is cut horizontally, the little pit where the seeds are kept is in the shape of a star and feels like thin cardboard. There were five seeds, all dark brown and shaped like a raindrop. The flesh was softer on its own without the protection of the skin and almost mushy. When I looked even closer, it seemed that the flesh of the apple was made up of tiny crystals that glistened in the light because of the juice and its cream coloring. The inside was even colder since it was wet. The sweet smell of the apple grew stronger and I finally gave in and took a…

As early as the Stone Age, people were eating citron fruits in China, too. Citron fruits may have reached China by floating in the ocean, or people on boats may have brought it. Citrons spread from the Pacific across Southeast Asia to India, too, and from China and India Citrons soon reached Central Asia, West Asia, and East Africa. Citron appears in an Egyptian tomb painting from1000 BC. These citrons were not juicy, and people mainly ate the rind rather than the fruit, or used citron rind to make perfumes.Indian doctors knew citrus could cure scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency), and so they tried it for a lot of other illnesses too. Citrons reached ancient Greece and Rome not much later; Theophrastus described the fruit in 310 BC. Those came from two other kinds of citrus fruit, cousins of the citron, called the pomelo and the mandarin. Either Chinese Or Indian food scientists bred the pomelo and the mandarin together sometime before 314 BC to get new fruits - the bitter orange and the sweet orange. Indian cooks used bitter orange to make pickled oranges. They called the trees naranga. That's where our word "orange" comes from. These oranges spread west along the Silk Road. The bitter orange (but not the sweet orange) reached West Asia by the time of Ibn Sina (who used it in a recipe), and then in the Middle Ages, the bitter orange reached Europe, where people used it to make marmalade, and North Africa: Albertus Magnus mentioned bitter oranges around 1250…
