Manolo Blahnik shoes. If you have been living on planet Earth these past 12 years, you must know that I am talking about Sex and the City. The show that attracted more then 10.6 millions of viewers every week . The show that is not just a funny, sharply written comedy but also a global media giant spreading its influence all over the broadcast networks.
So, are new fashion, language and super girlie cocktail orders the only thing that we have gotten from Sex and the City? Definitely not.
We see a brand of shoes, body type, or relationship style exemplified in some media , so it becomes something that we want . This explains why the entertainment industry is one of the most important parts of any economy. In the case of SATC, everyone from booze shakers to shoes makers made a profit. Who knew anything about Manolo Blahnik before Carrie? Who ordered Cosmopolitans before Samantha? More importantly, however, is the question: Have the joys of single life in NYC and female friendships become a ‘’Sex and the City dream’’? And how many of us are living it? …show more content…
First of all, I must admit that I watched SATC religiously because I found it fun and entertaining.
Even tough characters were more confident then me, better dressed and lived it Manhattan - they represented my thoughts.
I loved the concept that all of their problems could be solved by complaining a bit over a brunch and then simply carrying on living it up. It is refreshing to see their worlds not coming to an end because they don’t have a job or husband. They are normal or even slightly better then
that.
The whole world of dating, gossips and glamour was just irresistible for me. Seeing Carrie in the introduction, standing in a New York street wearing a ballet skirt, the sort that toddlers wear, made me realise that you can be who ever you want to be.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of things in the show that I disagree with.
The characters apparently have real life problems, but they solve them in the haute couture and glamour of NYC. That is not real life. Urban women are not portrayed realistically, as there is are only glamourous situations, in contrast to other tv series such as Desperate Housewives. .
Also, how many girls in middle and high school watched SATC from 1998 till now? Probably millions. The moral of the show is that women can be as promiscuous as men. Many believe that the show gave women permission to be blunt and selfish and sex-obsessed. I can agree with this to the certain extent. The fact that many teenagers are emulating the sort of behaviour seen on SATC obviously cannot be directly attributed to the show. However, shows like this plant a subconscious seed of thought in young women’s brain. I disagree that sexually omnivorous Samathta should be a role model for any women in the World.
People enjoy this show for many different reasons. I wouldn’t say that it has a bad influence on society as characters vary from prim-and-proper to oversexualized, so even if you draw parallel to your own life it doesn’t have to be something negative.
And in the end, no matter how independent or strong you are, aren’t you just ’’someone who is looking for love? Real love. Rediculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t live without each other love?’’ (Carrie’s quote)
