Katie is a 35-year-old professional woman, wife and mother of two small children. Katie was first introduced to pain medications after a car accident left her with an injured lower back. The pain medications she took, began a neurobiological response in Katie’s brain that she had no control over. Narcotics take aim at the brains reward system, saturating it with dopamine, giving the user a feeling of pleasure (“Drug Abuse, Addiction, and the Brain,” n.d. p. 2). Katie’s brain began to acclimate to the dopamine surges. Which in turn, the brain generates less dopamine and or decreases the dopamine receptors. This made Katie use more and more drugs, to continually try and attain the dopamine high (“Drug Abuse, Addiction, and the Brain,” n.d. p. 2) Brain imaging studies show that areas of the brain that regulate judgement, behavior control, learning and memory are affected by drug addiction. These changes create the abuser to seek out and take drugs compulsively (“Drug Abuse, Addiction, and the Brain,” n.d. p.1). This began Katie’s addiction to prescription pain medications.…

The Supreme Court first heard the case of Dred Scott vs. Sanford in 1857. Dred Scott was a slave who lived in Missouri with his owner. His owner took him to Illinois and Minnesota, two states that prohibited slavery. After the owner died, Scott proclaimed himself a free man and his family free due to the fact that he had resided on “free soil” for several years and that his four children had also been born on “free soil”. He sued the man’s widow and won and lost his case in several courts over an 11 year period. At this point in history, the Missouri Compromise had been in effect for about 40 years, but was never officially ruled on by the Supreme Court. Many Southerners were hoping that the Compromise be ruled unconstitutional due to the…

For a good bit of time, the American Justice system had an odd opinion on what was justice. Justice based on the conviction. Solely. No one was concerned with the person who had been violated in one form or another. As long as a conviction was obtained, everyone was delighted. The victims were forced to retell their story over and over again, to repeat their humiliation(in some cases) or just relive an unhappy memory. This repetition would happen 5 or 6 times before the police even arrive, in some cases. The struggle that placed upon the victim from both sides was enough of a deterrent that people began not to report crimes. Individuals who had witnessed some terrible occurrence often ended up with emotional challenges and would refuse to…
