When he returned, he was dressed in a gas mask, a load-bearded vest, a helmit, bullet proof leggings, and gloves. Holmes threw two cans of tear gas causing the audience to have itchy skin and throats. On October 2nd, 2002, a shooting spree near the Nation’s Capital would begin with the killing of a 55-year-old man and last 23 days. By the next morning, the 911 call center in the area would become inundated with calls of shootings across Montgomery County, Maryland. By the end of the day, four people were shot and killed in Maryland, and another was killed in the District of Columbia (FBI, 2007). Law Enforcement needed to act quickly to figure out if the shootings were linked and if so, who the suspects were. Over the course of several weeks, many more individuals would be killed or injured by shootings at random. The randomness of the shootings led the public to enter a panic, fearful of not knowing who the next victim could be. Law enforcement also had a difficult time as there did not appear to be any specific reason as to why some were targeted and others were not. Once the shootings were linked, law enforcement quickly worked together including local, state, and federal authorities.…

The Columbine High School Shooting allowed for advanced security among schools all over the United States. As claimed by a 2007 report from the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “there have been about half as many deaths per year since Columbine as in the seven school years before the tragedy…school homicides dropped from 33 in the 1998-1999 school year to 13 in the 1999-2000 year” (CITE). We have improved security and stricter rules to blame for this. National statistics also show an increase in public schools closely monitoring or locking their doors (CITE). After the violent massacre, most schools put in common security upgrades, such as “metal detectors, security cameras, required ID badges,…

great topic and presentation. It’s interesting that you included labeling theory in your research about mass shootings. By placing labels on these delinquents and stigmatizes them, leads them into developing a negative self-image. If a child is labeled as a criminal or delinquent and they hear every day, whether it be from family members, peers or teachers, they will hold these as self-fulfilling prophecies, believing the labels that are assigned to them. This in fact, leads that child in acting as the label. I find it sad that youths abandon the social norms because they (he/she) believes that they’re a bad person and that doing certain things (evil/bad) is for the best. I agree that once a person has been labeled through secondary…

Public service announcements are maybe a solution to the mass shootings that occur in our society, an example of a PSA would be anti-smoking smoking ads. Anti-smoking ads are aimed towards “rebellious” teens; teens who hate being told what to do and how to do it. The ads usually depict a teen having to always give up free time or spend their hard earned money which explains the consumption that smoking has over their lives. PSA’s should also focus on the kinds of individuals who commit these mass shootings, talking about and illustrating the consequences that comes with the horrible acts will most likely make a person think twice about carrying out a mass shooting. They could also explain the toll it takes on the victims families and/or anyone else who might be affected in a negative way.…

Violent shootings are becoming more and more popular in the United States. Last year there were 58,543 shooting incidents. There were 1,956 incidents where it was a self-defense case. There were also 2,552 home invasion cases and 2,201 of the shooting incidents were unintentional, which does make a whole lot of sense to me because I don’t know how you accidentally shoot somebody. However, 384 of these shooting incidents were classified as mass shooting incidents. That means there was a mass shooting everyday last year, which is a pretty scary thing to think about (Past Summary Ledgers).…

If you live in the United States, you are probably used to hearing about shootings happening somewhere in the country pretty frequently because of the poor gun control. The US is accountable for the most mass shootings in the world, but the government still decides to do nothing to help the situation at all. How many more children do parents need to bury, parents children have to say goodbye to, and role models do we have to lose before the government finally does something about it? The only answer to that question is, no one knows. The answer that so many around the country have been praying to have, and the answer that no one can give to them. The answer that, families of those that we have lost over the years and civilians that are scared…
