The "Sermon on the Mount" comes from the gospel of Matthew. It is the first book to appear in the New Testament but wasn't the first written down . It wasn't written down until 70-90 C.E write after the gospel of Mark in 60-70 C.E. Matthew was a tax collector before he met Jesus and was 1/2 of the gospel writers who were disciples of Jesus and knew him personally. Matthews gospel is aimed at a Jewish audience and puts special emphasis on Jesus fulfilling prophecies from the Old Testament. Matthew uses metaphors and language thats familiar to Jesus Christ to put emphasis on his action as evidence of his divinity. For ex: the Lord's prayer in the "Sermon" ends with "deliver us from evil", which echoes traditional Jewish prayers. During the year 70 C.E., the Romans burned the Jewish temple in Jerusalem and scattered the Jews from their homeland. This is the time for Matthews gospel to reach a jewish audience.
