For this essay, you will need to analyze the selling strategy of a print advertisement. Explain how the ad is selling its product (through images, text, and the messages they send), and why it is or isn’t effective. Your thesis statement should identify the specific selling strategy and argue for or against its effectiveness. In order to make a convincing argument, you will need specific examples from the advertisement to illustrate your point (both images and text). Avoid simply explaining what is in the advertisement; use your examples to make a point. This essay should contain an attention-grabbing, relevant introduction, well-developed body paragraphs, clear organizational choices, and a strong conclusion.
To begin analyzing your advertisement, ask yourself the following questions: ○ Who is the intended audience of the ad? How can you tell? ○ What are the images in the ad? What message do they send? ○ How do the images grab your attention? ○ How do the words/text enhance the overall message? ○ What does the ad seem to suggest about gender roles, class/status, age, ethnicity, or self-identity? ○ What cultural assumptions and values seem to be involved?
Audience:
You are writing for an intelligent and curious general audience. While you will need to describe your advertisement, you should describe only what is directly relevant to your argument. (In other words, use your examples to prove a point.) Remember, you are trying to persuade your readers not only how the advertisement is selling its product but also why that matters.
