It’s a popular system among several online homework system providers.
System Goals:
The student uses this online system to complete their math assignments.
Student need prepare computer, pen and paper before logging in the “WabAssign”. Open the computer and login into the “WebAssign”. Click the assignment assigned by professor. The student read each problem and calculates on paper.
Input:
After getting the answer, student input the answer and click “submit” button.
Process(comparison):
This time, the “WebAssign” compares the correct answer with the answer input by student.
Output/ negative feedback:
If the answer input equals to the correct answer, system shows “Correct!”. If the answer input is not equal to the correct answer, system shows “Try again!” on screen.
Correction process:
Student will recalculate the problem on paper, input the new answer into “WebAssign” again and click “submit” button. The system compares the correct answer with new answer again.
This is a process called cybernetics. It is originally applied to WebAssign system. It includes input initial guess, comparing process, re-computing and continuing cycle. It can continue corrections until desired target reached and stop the feedback. Cybernetics need to respond to changing conditions.
And it is a negative feedback because after the student tries several times and he corrects his answer, he can get the right answer. The right answer is the desired target.
The process is repeated until the system shows “Correct!” on screen. Students move to next problem of the assignment. Student logs off “WebAssign” when he or she completes the homework.
