Essay Question: How does intra- and interpersonal perception (understanding yourself and other people) contribute to individual success both at university and later at work?!

Every individual in the world owns an own intrapersonal perception because of their imagination and experiences. So everybody has got an image of himself which includes the behavior as well as the persons´ strength and weakness. This affects the manner and the behavior of the person how he presents himself. This understanding of the own image can be a realistic one or simply be wrong. The intrapersonal perception isn´t always conform with the interpersonal perception. This is the image from other people what they have from us. This external image emerges through the behavior of the person and it is important how the other people sense me.
So, for example, there is a person who thinks to be helpful, but the people around the person feel this help as obtrude. External images are very subjective and can change from friend to friend. But everybody develops imaginations of how he self is viewed by his friends (supposed external image). However, you haven´t got a direct influence to change the external image. !
In fact, it is very important for students to create a realistic intrapersonal perception because it helps them in their study. Bercher (2012, p. 26-27) determines, that students who know themselves are better able to adjust their mind and performance. That means, having a realistic imagination from yourself helps you to estimate the learning stuff and to learn it organised and coordinated. An unrealistic intrapersonal perception often results in unrealistic estimations of the learning stuff and students overestimate their own capabilities which lead to bad marks in the tests. Moreover, it is necessary that the student gets feedback which can be positive or negative. This helps him, to judge his results as well as it helps him to improve his work the next time. can also confirm his work and this leads to a better intrapersonal perception and motivates him to obtain his performance. In fact, the intrapersonal perception is promoted in an esteeming surrounding. !

Abele and Garold Stasser (2008, p. 577) interdependency don´t need to result in a feeling of a social unity but it can. So „Interdependency can result in bad outcomes as well as good outcomes“ (Susanne Abele and Garold Stasser, 2008, p. 577). That means, group dynamic and social interaction in a group depends from matching and mismatching, which means having the same opinion or not. There is a phenomenon which says that a individual feels more likable with someone who has the same opinion.
It is my belief, that it would be very successful and helpful to learn how the others feel and think. This performance helps to increase the interpersonal similarity. As a result, this would lead to less mismatching points and results in a better group performance. So you have to learn how to coordinate. This may help you in group work in the university as well as in your job later. To underline this fact, Susanne Abele and Garold Stasser demonstrated this fact in an experiment, which proved that „coordination success increased the perceptions of interpersonal similarity and liking when matching was required but not when mismatching was required“. (2008, p.578) This interpersonal skill is also important for the leadership, because "Effective communication, mainstream emotional intelligence, an appreciation of one 's own intelligence and that of others and the ability to leverage one 's strengths and minimize drawbacks are all leadership tools.“ (Doehrman, Marylou, 2003) I believe, there are many leaders out there who have a great understanding of their work but inadequate interpersonal skills.
This can result in a chaotic, unorganized work performance. A successful leader should lead his employees, coordinate them in order to achieve their aims and he has the functional task of cohesiveness. However, these skills are learnable, because there are so many coach trainings and books out there. But, some leaders can use these skills in a negative way in order to manipulate their employees which is shown in work without having a choice. To be more precisely, manipulative employees or leader try to convince other employees of a special opinion in order to enforce their aim. However, leaders have to be careful because of the high expectations to them from the employees. This can, in some cases, according to Maree Roche and Jarrod M. Haar (2013, p. 515) lead to burnout and overextension.

Another factor of a successful intrapersonal perception is called assimilation. Is is important that a individual don´t change their mind in order to be liked by other people. A successful person defend their mind and thoughts and should not change their views.
This results in respect and forces the self esteem of the person. !

What is more, it is very important to know exactly the own self-image in order to respond to negative feedback which is based on enviousness or jealousy. In this case, the person should simply ignore this feedback and he doesn 't need to modify himself. That means, we should ask ourselves if there are motives behind this feedback. But, if we get a negative feedback from people we love or we think they want to support us, the individual should check his self-image in this point. !
All in all, one can say that everyone has to consider their intra- and interpersonal perception in order to be successful in the study or job. The people should always compare their self image with the feedback they get, because the larger the difference between the self image and the image what others have from us is, the large is the risk for problems and conflicts. The individual should not be too fixed on his self-image, it is better to be open minded. What is more, it is important to have a positive self- image in order to be productive, motivated, friendly, happy and able to enjoy what he has achieved. !
