Mccarthyism In The 1950's
In the 1950’s as a result of the recent acceleration of the Cold War and the spread of communism ideology around the world, and a national neurosis concerning a communist invasion expanded, Senator Joseph McCarthy took advantage of this "Red Scare" to advance his interests. McCarthy was a Republican Senator for the state of Wisconsin from 1947 until his death in 1957. McCarthy made claims that Soviet, Korean and Chinese communist spies occupied the federal administration. In February 1950 when McCarthy asserted in a speech given in Wheeling West Virginia that he had a file that listed of members of the Communist Party who the State Department employed. He chaired the House Committee known as the Un-American Activities. The Committee investigated thousands of people, who were thought to be Communist spies and sympathizers, this was later known as McCarthyism. No one was exempt from the wrath of McCarthy, many individuals who worked for the federal government, universities, film industry, and …show more content…
McCarthyism is alive and well in today’s society. Today, Americans are observing Donald Trump exploits fears of terrorism using McCarthy’s rulebook and, going beyond McCarthy’s approach and sleaziness. McCarthy especially treated anyone who was not “with him” as an enemy, showing them total arrogance and showering them with insults. Sounding familiar, Trump has repeatedly done the same. Trump has fired eleven people for not being with him in less than two hundred days. Trump Insults competitors and disgracing them with names. Trump attacks Mexicans, stereotyping those who immigrate to the United States as “sex offenders and felons.” When in fact most Mexicans are just trying to make a living doing jobs that most Americans would not do. Like McCarthy, no one is too powerful to escape Trump’s venom such as his attack on the Muslim parents of deceased American Army hero Captain Humayun Khan, go well beyond McCarthy at his

Kubrick’s choice to chose to film his movie in black-and-white creates a more serious tone and mood. A black-and-white film creates the effect of having a point that needs to be made across to the audience and exercises the concepts in the movie to be compared to reality. Evidently, this film about nuclear weaponry sends a political message about what can happen between the USSR and America. The black-and-white also enhances the seriousness of the mood and provides the relation of connecting this film to McCarthyism. Though people were filled with fear and paranoia, this film is the perfect satire to hoax people about political and military psychosis.…

Senator McCarthy caused great controversy during his short but remarkable period of fame, as his exploitation of the American population’s fear had an unmistakable effect on the social life of the time. However, despite all the controversy McCarthy stirred, despite the numerous trials and hearings he held, he appears to not have made a significant mark regarding government policies or legislations. This rises the question; To what extent did Senator Joseph McCarthy and His Actions Have a Social and Legislative Effect on the American Government and its Citizens? It is a question worthy of investigating, as this way, by not only analyzing the main person or event, but also consequences, we are provided with a larger scope of results, as well as a better understanding of the cause and effect relationship of significant events or time periods such as the Cold War, or specifically McCarthyism…

This was after World War II when Russia was rising to power and the fear of communist was fresh in very American. Instead of giving his alleged list to the FBI for investigation, McCarthy chose to hold Congressional hearing to investigate the claims personally. A panic spread throughout America just like in the Salem Witch Trails. Everyone quickly began to suspect his or her family and friends as hidden communist, with little to no evidence. Although there were no deaths, many were blacklisted until it had been clear that the list was fraud. This is just another example how mass hysteria can steer a community out of…

Joseph McCarthy was a junior senator from Wisconsin who gave a speech in West Virginia in February 1950 in which he made the threat of communism clear to the people, “Today, only six years later, there are 800 million people under the absolute domination of Soviet Russia - an increase of over 400 percent. On our side the figure has shrunk to around 500 million. In other words, in less than six years the odds have changed from 9 to 1 in our favor to 8 to 5 against us” (Document G). The Soviet Union, whose form of government is communism, are extraordinarily dangerous. With the rate they are spreading world domination would not be far. Joseph McCarthy was born on November 14, 1908, into a Roman Catholic family in Appleton, Wisconsin. Historians later regarded McCarthy as “one of the least qualified, most corrupt politicians of his time.” His political era later became known as “McCarthyism.” He established his place in the political world by using unscrupulous methods such as propaganda and slander. During the time when McCarthy’s re-election for Senator was approaching, he was advised by Edmund Walsh to start a hunt against supposed communist troublemakers to improve his chances of re-election. On February 9, 1950, McCarthy revealed to the American public that he had a list of 205 people in the State Department that were a part of the American Communist Party. America was…

Joseph McCarthy and Donald Trump are two demagogues who have inflicted fear upon Americans as a way to consolidate their own political power. A Junior Senator from Wisconsin in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Joseph McCarthy, intuitively understood that Americans tend to fear what they don’t understand. They fear those who don’t look familiar. They fear the unknown. During the Cold War he exploited American’s fear of Communism in order to create a cult-like following. Sadly, seventy years later, the U.S. is once again being governed by those same fears with the election of President Donald Trump. Rather than invoking the evils of Communism, Trump preys on Americans’ fear of Muslims, Mexicans and any other immigrant group who, like…

McCarthyism not only destroyed the lives and careers of many Americans but also the innocent image of the country. Senator Joe McCarthy from Wisconsin was the same as any man. But when he cried Communism the world seemed to listen.

Following the Cold War between Russia and the United States there came many hardships, such as unemployment and high inflation. These hardships produced a restless society. The society then looked for something or someone to blame (Fried, 39). They found someone to blame. Communists. Throughout the country there was a witch hunt known as the Red Scare. A basic idea was formed: Communism was evil. Anyone who participated in such evil was considered illegitimate and were to be excluded from such things as sharing ideas, and jobs (Reeves, 136). This fear of Communism or anti-Communism as it was called could be described as a type of "virus." When all was calm in America the virus would fade, but the moment a crisis struck, the virus came back stronger than ever (Feuerlicht, 35). Communism was a threat not only for countries overseas but a threat for America and its people. It was a threat on the American way of life, a bruise on the phrase "the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." (Feuerlicht, 45) And McCarthy helped spread this fear.

McCarthy and his ways challenged the Bill of Rights. "When free speech or due process are denied to any individual everyone's rights are jeopardized. Today's oppressors may become tomorrow's accursed group." (Feuerlicht, 154) And nothing is guaranteed more than the destruction of America when the freedoms promised by the Bill of Rights are denied (Feuerlicht, 154). McCarthy installed a fear in the people. But people feared tremendously the loss of their jobs. They feared that their political afflictions would reflect on their job status (Reeves, 99). By trying to keep America from becoming a Communist nation, McCarthy and his followers turned the country into an anti - Communist…

The beginning of concerns over the spread of communism started around World War I, but it turned to panic when Alger Hiss, who was a high-ranking State Department official was convicted of espionage in 1947 under the democratic presidency of Harry Truman ("McCarthyism"). This fear was even further exacerbated with news that the Soviet Union had exploded its first A-bomb in 1949 and the world’s most populated nation, China, declared it had become communist ("McCarthyism"). It was at this time that a Wisconsin Senator by the name of Joseph McCarthy came to be known nationally for declaring that he was aware of a significant number of communist party members who worked in the United States Department of State. His claims initiated investigations into determining if any public official, high rank armed forces officers and even decorated war heroes were actually communist spies. His rampage continued on through 1954 when he made the fatal mistake of televising the hearings. The public could now see and hear how ruthless and vengeful his campaign against communism had become and turned against him. Soon thereafter other members of the Senate censured him and the investigations were abruptly halted ("McCarthyism").…
