Meal M8 belongs to the “fresh food subscription service”, “meal subscription service” or “meal kit service”. Other companies related to the industry include, Hello Fresh, Relish, Blue Apron, and more. The primary differentiating factor among companies in the industry include whether the service is tied to delivery; but meal planning based on a subscription makes up the common framework. The industry has expanded over the years due to advancements in smartphone application technology and consumers’ acceptance of the subscription service model. This, along with a rise in the number of people looking for nutritious alternatives to everyday meals, has helped the industry gain ground into the billion-dollar range; Techonomic predicts that by 2020, the fresh food subscription service industry will be a $3 - $5 billion-dollar industry.

For companies that do not include a delivery service, but provide meal planning applications or websites, the economic factors that would affect the industry would be less significant, yet vary greatly based on demographic and geographic restrictions.

Technological factors that affect the meal planning industry are tied to the smartphone application and internet sectors of the technology industry. The success of meal planning applications depends on the application interface, and its ability to be used across different operating systems (i.e. Android versus iOS). Additionally, ease of use is important in terms of user interaction and functionality.     Today‟s consumers are seeking solutions that allow them to maximize their free time and disposable income dollar, and spend more time doing the things they value. The convenience trend is driven by this desire to create more leisure time. The convenience trend is driven by this desire to create more leisure time. In 2008, a Datamonitor survey found that 44% of citizens across 15 countries feel that it is difficult to manage their daily obligations and find time to relax. A Yankelovich study conducted in 2008 discovered 70% of Americans aged 16 years or older feel that they do not have the time to do all the things they need to do. Cooking at home is seen as a chore, and meal preparation is considered very time consuming. Eating alone at non-fixed mealtimes is becoming more common, as a result of changed eating habits, attitudes toward cooking, and busy lifestyles (Ahlgren 2005).
