Remember that one show Arthur you probably watched as a kid? Guess what, it's a meme now. What about that one sad video of the ex couple talking? Oh wait, that turned into a meme as well. What about that news report of a dead gorilla? Darn, it's a meme as well. In today's culture, no matter how much you avoid it, everything that goes viral on the internet becomes a meme in a matter of seconds. Memes are unavoidable. They are easy to make and if it's unique enough, it's likely for it to become viral in a short period of time. Memes have no barriers. Whether it's young or old, they can be enjoyed by everyone. They use humor to criticize and address real life issues. Whether it's daily first world issues or politics, memes are a comical relief to the struggles many people face. One of the best examples of memes being used to criticize an issue was the 2016 U.S elections. Memes were used to make fun of the dreadful options the U.S had for presidential nominees. All over social media, people would post memes mocking the crummy words that were said during debates or rallies. For example, during the democratic primaries, Bernie vs. Hillary memes were used to expose how out of touch Hillary Clinton was with the youth. Even though most of those memes were exaggerated, they addressed the belief that Bernie was a better representative for millennials. The memes were an accurate representation since Bernie received the majority of votes among young people. After Bernie lost the primaries, popular memes were still used to address the elections. The thing is, both the candidates were very unpopular. . This created memes that didn’t really benefit either candidate, but rather made fun of them. After Donald Trump became president, memes were used in a colossal manner by those who disagreed with him. This was proven effective when even the White House Press Secretary had to share “alternative facts” when memes were posted that compared Trump’s small inauguration crowd to president Obama’s. And yes, a new set of memes was created after this disastrous press
