For many women menopause brings unpleasant side effects such as hot flushes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, night sweats, depression and weight gain. Menopause can also bring serious health concerns because it increases the risk for bone loss and heart disease. Eighty percent of adults with osteoporosis are women (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, 2006). Osteoporosis, often called the “silent epidemic”, is a disease that takes a lifetime to develop and consequently a lifetime to prevent. It is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue with no outward signs or symptoms until late in the disease when bones become much fragile and are apt to break (Edelstein, 2009). Calcium is a nutrient needed for strong bones, but the body cannot absorb it properly without the help of vitamin D. The combination of calcium and vitamin D helps strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis.
